Friedpiggy Posted January 28, 2016 Posted January 28, 2016 Good morning all Right, so I am going off to go and buy new tyres this weekend. Conti Gatorskins. I am just curious as to what the actual difference is between foldable and wire beaded. I know the foldable ones are lighter, but is that the only difference? is there a durability difference or what is the point in having the wire bead if all it does is add weight? As someone new to cycling its a touch confusing so thought I would ask before I buy the wrong thing. Thanks

jimmycool Posted January 28, 2016 Posted January 28, 2016 As far as I know the wire bead is cheaper to manufacture. It is also more difficult to get on and off the rim if you have a tight rim/ tyre combo.
DJR Posted January 28, 2016 Posted January 28, 2016 Foldable tyre easier and quicker to place and remove, and especially when you fix a puncture somewhere alone on a godforsaken road and it is getting dark, or in a race and you don't want to lose your brilliant seeding. It is also lighter.
