I spoke to one of the Shimano Europe guys yesterday and we were chatting about 1-2X12 speeds for road and mtb.He said that Shimano were ready to go into production but that there wasn't a market for it.

He also said that with the Trek boost system you could go up to 14 and not need a narrower chain.

That 50t at the rear will be the same size as a compact road chainring 50t

Sounds ridiculous, but it would allow a large chainring so you will havethe same range as 2x top and bottom. Just imagine what that casette will cost though, yikes

Keeping same chain and going to 14 cogs will result in some serious cross-chaining at the two extremes. I forsee chainrings that run on floating mounting points to accomodate this.

Also imagine the weight of a 14 cog cassette. Soon they'll be moulded carbon fibre with thin steel facings for the teeth....and cost R10k .

According to this article, Shimano actually has a patent for a 14-speed casette: http://www.fiets.nl/2016/01/24/sram-2017-12-speed-mtb-groep/

I give up.

Honestly. Mark my words... At this rate in a few years the entire back wheel will be a cassette 10/11t - 180t. The tyre will mount on a rim that would be machined straight into the cassette's biggest sprocket.

I'd go back to 8 speed if it were still available.
