It's my first time doing this type of event. What's the approach to corrugation in terms of bike setup? Does a slightly softer fork setup and tyres help? I'm looking to do 8 hours plus on a hardtail, so improvements to comfort trump outright efficiency.

See you all there!

Doing my third one this year; really no way of knowing how much corrugation you will face; very little rain probably means roads arent too rutted; also no idea when last the roads were scraped. Best is too watch what the guys infront are doing, they figure out the flattest, fastest line on the roads; usually right in the tyre track of the farm vehicles, hook onto a nice group and then you can tick off km's at a rapid rate.

I wouldnt overthink the set up too much, depending on weight, probably 1.6 to 1.8 bar range. You have a few fast downhills, nothing overly technical, again dependent if the roads are rutted.

Dont forget the few climbs at the end, if you burnt your matches on the first 140km the last 20 becomes a uncomfortable effort.

See you all there!

It was my first 'ultra' last year, and I was not prepared for the distance, but made it in just over 8 hours.

My tips: after the first water point there is a stiff climb with a few steep kickers that is the only section not on a road. Don't go crazy there, I went too hard and started cramping at about 70km. Not a great rest of the day after that!

From then til about 135km it is fairly pleasant with little climbing - I rode a 26er last year and the corrugations were tough in places, but not horrendous.

At the last water point there's a right turn that starts the last climb - keep something in reserve, as I crawled up there. After that and a lovely sharp downhill there are another few short sharp climbs that hurt. But from then on it's all downhill til the end...

(or that's what I thought until Meurant told us on the morning there was a last extra 2km climb and some extra that made the distance 164km)

Did the 50 miler.  The conditions were great until just past halfway when a fresh southerly headwind wind picked up all the way home.

Was a nice race, well organised with a good turnout.

I managed 13th overall and 1st Vet in.

Well done b20, did the 100; last weeks Sani2c gave me a free pass till 100km, then it was a very very hard slog and dodging cramps

This was absolutely awesome. My first time and I totally underestimated it with the memory of my 5 times TransKaroo still fresh in the memory. 100 miler took it's toll on me and I deserved that.

I was totally blown away by a surprise spectator visit at last spectator point, which was also were I had a chat with Meurant who pointed out that the real fun was about to start - climbing and rolling hills. He was not joking, those climbs were a proper sting in the tail. Excellent ride, and for the money you won't be able to beat this.

Did the 50. Missed my estimated time by 15 minutes, which is not that bad. The last 26+-km broke me completely, They still made a comment at the start of the 50 that if you are over 90kilos you will suffer, well try almost 130kilos without kit and then we talk again.

Saw a few guys that hit the wall worse then me, gave one dude some dates and a banana in the last few kms.

Only issue i have is the 50 miler turned out a 51 miler  :whistling:

Water points were great, i didn't have soup but i heard they guys that did take it saying it was great, i had some bread and potatos which was great. Was awesome stopping at a water table and all the poeple working there was super quick to help and refill bottles.

I ran out of water from our water 1 to 2 and again towards the end, Will do it with a camelbak next time.

Also got a bit peed off with some of the 100 miler guys coming past in the last couple of kilos thinking that because i am doing the 50 i wont be able to descend and then getting stuck behind them on the downhills breaking all my speed which must help me up on the next hill again. But i guess this was a dirt roadie event.

I heard one lady got attack but a farmers boerboel, he took a bite out of her thigh and she had to go to the hospital.  And that was 3km from the end. That sucks.

And then where we turned into the wind some $#%^& sat in my slip for more than 10km every time i slowed down he would just slow down even more, didn't want to help out at all, but i saw he had a specialized shirt on so i can't blame him.  :whistling:

Well done, B20. Had a nice ride in the group. After a heavy crash last week couldn't breathe deeply so was extremely grateful for the guys and one girl who formed a nice dirt-peloton until it all fell apart on the hill. After that had a painfully slow solo to the finish with a long-haired fellow about 50m ahead the whole time. That last hill was an eternity. Finished in 3.35ish so all good in the end. Pancakes went down very well!

The 1 mile extra isn't the problem. It's what it does to the route profile! :) but only 1,160m of climbing not the 1400m they said on the site
