Its a matter of supply and demand. its their box to do with what they like and if they would rather sell it than recycle or dump it then thats their choice..its also your choice to either pay for it or tell them thanks but no thanks and then get it from your LBS.  My LBS supplied me three boxes for Argus without even batting an eye...so guess where I go for my cycling needs..and I may even forgive them a mistake or two that they might make

On a PLUS side, I went to CYCLE LAB in WESTLAKE, they sorted out my Carbon Fork which another LBS said couldn't be sorted - 5 minutes work - oh yes - free of charge also. That is SERVICEClapThumbs%20Up

I am a Cyclelab club member and don't mind admitting it. If I recall correctly from club newsletters received in the past, they had bike boxes made up for the Argus transportation and it is probably one of these that they offered you.

The basic bike box that all bikes come in cannot be compared to those used by special transportation companies and I suspect the one they offered you was more reinforced than normal. The box used when my bike was transported to the Argus was wide enough to wrap a thick blanket around the bike, was much sturdier, and could withstand some rough treatment. It was also big enough to fit my bike in without having to disassemble it.

do you really need a box? yours should be the only bike on the plane. my experience is that they take greater care of an article if they know what it is. a box is just a box. they never read the writing no matter just big "fragile" is printed.

There seems a lot of banter in respect of this. personally, I would only transport my bike in bike bag or bike case. I have spent a load of my hard earned cash on my bikes so when I do transport them, I always try to use the best that I can get......I'm sure that boxes work well but personally I wouldnt take a chance!

In terms of shops, I support my LBS, but still like to look around Cyclelab occasionally and have felt that their service and range is reasonably good for a large bike shop. I do however tend to know what I am looking for and just usually go there either to see a product before buying or to use as a comparative price guide to haggle with my LBS - A joy that you dont have with a large retail type store!

What happened to "do you want a normal box for free or can we shake your pocket for our state of the art carton boxes imported from Siberia ?" . You have after all already paid for the normal box your bike came in , the fact is you just never took it or asked for it .

on the few occasions that i have travelled o/seas with my bike, i just took off the rear deraileur and wheeled the bike as is up to the counter, weighed it and then the airline called a "back office chap" who wheeled it away to the back. the bike was alway the first out at my destination.

i used to have an old box (scott i think it was) given to me by my LBS at no charge, that i'd used a couple of times.... this self same box is now carefully stored in the cape to ensure that it's current possessor's baby can safely travel up to do the 94.7 Wink

i personally would never take my baby on a plane not safely packaged in a box or race case bag.

i took my bike , a pink CSK Track Bike, to PE last week, i took it in a free giant bike box that i got from Cyclesphere my LBS, it got nicked in PE so i returned home with wheel covers and the bike without a box. i watched them the whole time with the bike on and off the plane they took fantastic care of it. so i dont think airlines are as bad when you are the only bike on the flight.

Hi All,

Just to put the record straight. These are specificaly designed Bigger, Sturdier boxes that are specially made (Thanks to Hadley Mcormack) for transporting your bike. The cardboard is a lot thicker and as somebody earlier said, you are able to leave your bike built (except to remove wheels) and drape a blanket around it.
