The contractors awarded the work are smiling.

Intention is good, adherence and enforcement not.

Non cyclists don't give a crap.... because they probably never rode a bike before

It's hopeless isn't it.

Where I lived in the UK they put a cycle lane along the sea front but they put it through the middle of the promenade. It wasn't long before a cyclist collided with a pedestrian who was seriously hurt in the incident and the cyclist got the blame.

I guess we (most societies, excluding the Dutch perhaps) are years away from a successful intergrated multi-form transport system.

Smashed into a pedestrian with my Steel 26"  when he walked into the cycle lane (Adderley Street Cape Town) without looking. I knocked him clean off his feet. Welcome to the cycle lane mothaf...

I am surprised that there are no taxi's using the cycle lane in that video. When I worked in Sandton the taxi's would use the lane at the intersection of West and Fredman all the time.

People give a hoot about cycling lanes.  Maybe time to take a red spray can and spray the cars, or a sticker on the windows.

One of the problems I have with the SA commuter culture is that we tend to think that its ok to do speeds of between 25 and 40km/h in an urban environment.

If we reduce our speeds to no faster than 15km/h we will all be a lot safer.

Here is a clip of the speeds done in Europe by commuters. Note also that they mostly cycle with very upright bikes. It helps with enlarging the peripheral vision and stopping and starting is much easier with a very relaxed setup like this.

Taking the law into your own hands like this unfortunately will open you up to a damage to property claim against you. We should rather focus on awareness and put pressure on law enforcement to deal with offenders.
