RIFLE

have had great fun learning to load rounds... don't worry I don't have them on my premises, they are stored with a friend who has a license. It's been 3 months or around 55 working days so far for my licence so hoping it'll be soon now.

Cleaning this reminded me that old things can be wonderful.

This is some detail of a 1921 W R Pape 12# side by side. It was made in Birmingham and is a work-a-day box lock, nothing fancy, but just look at the craftsmanship from nearly 100 years ago! B.t.w. W R Pape is the guy who invented choking in shotguns. It has lived a hard working life, but was always well looked after, so it will be good for another 100 years.

Look after your new rifle - and in a 100 years your grandkids will post stuff like this!

I inherited an Aya boxlock side by side from my father and I believe it was his father's that he inherited. The engraving on it is not so detailed as in this one, I will try to see if I have some photos of it somewhere.

How did you clean the engraving? I want to clean it without accidentally causing more damage.

I use nothing more than a toothbrush on it and wipe it with a lightly oiled cloth. If the engraving is badly clogged in parts, you can try a fine copper / brass brush, but very gently, because you don't want to get rid of the patina it collected over the many years. If it has developed a grimy waxy gluey layer on it from years and years of oil and dust, then I would clean it with a solvent like turps or even thinners and a toothbrush.  I don't want to get the solvents on the wood or you end up with a 2 tone look on the wood and you then have to re-do the stock finish. Sometimes I would disassemble for that reason.

Some Ayas have become quite sought after, but mainly the sidelocks (Aya no.1 & 2) in their "English" style guns. In terms of quality they are just as good as English guns, and they have a very loyal following, even in England, which is unusual for any continental gun. Do you know their history? Ah well, I'll post the link anyway.......

Their "round action" boxlock is one of the nicest looking modern guns around.

so I've pretty much got everything i need to starting shooting as soon as my license is approved. I've got a silencer, loaded 100 rounds and all sorts of other stuff. The next item I'm on the look for is a silencer cover to reduce the effects of the heat. Has anyone got some recommendations on inexpensive options.

I bought one of these:

nice looking rifle

I got down to the range for the first time in ages. I'm still waiting for my license to come through so shot a friends 270 with a load we did

we shooting pmp brass, 90 grain sierra bullets with a 61 grain load. Speed through chrono was hitting 3300fps. Grouping ok as we had a very strong cross wind that wasn't consistent.

Really can't wait for my rifle to come through

just got the sms to say my license has been approved. around 3.5 months from the date I submitted it at my local DFO..

now another couple of weeks wait for the actual license and then time to go shoot some paper or steel. Going to tell my colleagues that if I don't arrive one morning in December they mustn't worry, I'm just at the range

Time to load a few rounds as well in preparation for the day

So my dad recently made a brass tumbler and it works ok.

But on the advice of a friend I made a mixture containing caustic soda to clean the cases. I then had issues with the container that I was using and ended up leaving the cases in the mixture for 2 days while I tried to get a new waterproof container. When I opened the original container up after two days to transfer the cases to the new one, all my cases had gone black. 140 fairly clean brass cases now are terribly blackL

Fortunately they weren’t the main lot of cases that I was planning to use and I have enough other cases. But it’s a bit annoying. Does anyone perhaps have a solution to fix this that doesn’t involve cleaning each case individually?

the guys that suggested caustic soda is a very keen shooter, although he's not had his own tumbler. Going to through the soda away

Stealth brass- will i have to clean each case individually?

honestly think I'll just throw these away and right off as school fees. Most of them I was given and wasn't plan to use as my main cases. Oh well

Thanks for all the help

So I received an SMS on Friday from the SAPS saying the license for my 9MM will expire next year. Thing is, I don't own a 9MM or any firearm for that matter. It has the serial number for the hand gun in the SMS, I am wondering if I should try contact someone to inform them that the cell number on the system is wrong. Anyone know who I could contact?
