Mongoose - How did you get to choosing the .270 over the .308/30-06. I see you said you'd stick to shooting springbok for the time being which is fair, but any other reason?

How are you finding the trigger on your Howa 1500? I am very inexperienced with guns (read shot only a handful of rounds), so probably wouldn't know the difference, but there are alot of opinions that the trigger is the "only" real weak point on the Howa 1500 (though apparently pretty inexpensive to rectify/replace).

Most 270's are equipped with barrels better suited for 130gr bullets. Flat base bullets are usually less expensive than boat tails

I’m shooting 130gr American Whitetail from Hornady.Barrel is a short 22inch.

thanks guys

i had spoken to quite a few people and a lot recommended the 270. I'm also completely new so went with what they suggested. And it was the 270 that I found at a good price. Am happy with the choice. Maybe later in life once I've learnt more and can shoot better then I'll look for another rifle.

I don't have anything to really compare the trigger with as I'm so new. But I was happy with it over the week end with my first shoot. But I was so focused on trying to figure out what the heck was going on with my shots all over the place that I didn't really worry about the trigger

I don't see this rifle being a long term thing but sure it'll serve me well for quite a while.

I need a new scope first before I do any modifications on the rifle itself.

Most new factory made rifles come with a fairly heavy trigger pull. They do it like that for safety reasons. Most are easily adjusted, modified or replaced to give a lighter crisper trigger. Don't try work on it yourself, trust only a good competent gunsmith to work on a trigger. Don't be tempted to go for too light a trigger, rather aim to have a moderately light but predictable trigger.

A .270 will do just about anything you need. It is just about as versatile as a 30-06 (the other contender for great all round calibre) and a great reliable, accurate, (relatively) cheap to shoot calibre. It has a little less punch than a 30-06, but it reaches out further. It shoots flatter than a 30-06 because it is faster, but that speed also cause more meat damage at shorter distances. Gain on the swings, lose on the roundabouts!

i shot a bit with a friends 22 hornet and it has a super super feather light trigger. I didn't really like it as it felt like it would fire just by breathing. I'm happy with a slight heavier trigger at the moment

Yup, those very light ones make me nervous too

must just give a shout out to the guys at http://silenthunter.co.za/

I bought their silent hunter silencer for R1400 and it works really well. Recoil is reduced nicely and sound nicely down. Again I don't have much to compare with but I'm happy and two friends who have been shooting for years were both impressed with it. Both are wanting to possibly get one for their rifles.

And customer service was good. Less than two days fro the time I ordered to delivery in CT.

What scope do you have on it?

A basic remington 4x40 but it's not adjustable while shooting for different distances. Once it's set then I have to manually compensate for drop

I don't know them, but in general, on a tight budget, a fixed magnification scope is preferable to a cheap and nasty adjustable one. The more fiddly bits there are, the more fiddly bits to go wrong. A 4x is good for just about any hunting distance, from close up to 200 m or so. When you want to upgrade, do your homework as well as you would for bike upgrades and buy the very best your budget allows.

the magnification was actually quite decent and I was quite happy with it. Once I have learnt it then I'm sure it'll be fine for the first year or so. Also learning now what to look for on a scope so I can do proper research when wanting to buy one.

I Use 130gr Nosler Partition bullets. They work well with my rifle.

Agreed. I Have hunted a lot of game from Springbok to Kudu and Gemsbok with my .270. I've been on a farm or two that requires a .30cal or bigger rifle, then I use my 30-06.

Thanks,

From my reading and then chatting to a few guys, it seems .270, .30-06 and .308 are all great for "all rounders", with a slight limitation on the .270 (but the way I see it, I probably won't be taking on an Eland any time soon anyway). I suppose if there is a good deal going on something (apparently a friend of a friend has a Weatherby 30-06 collecting dust), I'm with you on there not being much point for me going bigger than the .270.

Again, this is early days for me - so I need to load myself up on knowledge for a year or two before buying anything!
