FYI - Amsterdam didn't even feature once...

Good video though!  But it shows that the community needs to be the driving force that brings about the change.  Without the community buy in, the system wouldn't work.

I've cycled in Amsterdam and London, and it's plainly clear that it's safer in the Netherlands.  Dedicated bike lanes where everybody obeys the laws and respect from other road users.

London is like here - the car is the boss.

fully agree with you, in Amsterdam everyone obeys the law and seem much more relaxed.

London again feels cramped up and being such a cosmopolitan city full of hustle and bustle it seems ppl don't tend to really care about each other besides themselves.

Cultural difference between the Dutch and the English. The Dutch are far less egotistical. In the Netherlands right is right and wrong is wrong. In England he who has the most land and pounds is right even if he is wrong

We watched people riding in London city center last time we were there and it looked great fun. No cycle lanes, just riding in groups of about 15 people, robot to robot. Bit like circuit training!

the oil crisis in the 70s had a big influence on the legislative changes, and low speeds and no helmets work well together. No racer mentality at work over there. rather a sense of community (the poster in the 70s asking for more public transport). BRT is the right concept.

In A'Dam everyone obeys the law????

You clearly have never been there.

I really enjoyed commuting in London.

It is far more enjoyable than the tube in summer...... It is also way less dodgy than riding here.

Comparing first world countries to a developing country like ours is also silly. Apples with apples, not apples with a grape.

Indeed I have sir, 27days of pure bliss :) but we talking about cycling specifically nothing else

Correct, London is very similar to SA when we look at cycling.

The main problem with people in SA is we do not know what it means to commute by bicycle. Most of our cycling commuters don't really commute, they happen to be training with their bicycles from home to work. And vice versa. I've seen numerous commuter cyclists riding in the road...right next to a perfect cycle lane. Why is this? Are the cycle lanes not good enough? Or is the road quicker? More suitable to someone training than someone commuting?

I've cycled in Amsterdam, it is complete bliss. I have never understood what people mean when they say "South Africans are aggressive drivers" until I rode a bike in Amsterdam. Cars are so chilled, no one is in a hurry, they give right of way to pedestrians and cyclists.

SA's or so obsessed with their cars...until that mentality changes, things wont change.

100% correct. I live in Amsterdam. The mentality of drivers unbelievable. Every day i would see kids, as young as 6 or 7 cycle on their own to school in the road, perfectly safe. Busses, cars, trucks will sit patiently behind them until it is safe to pass.

Exactly! Over here I get hooted at when I ride in a turning lane, not because I am in the wrong, but because the fat lady in the car behind me is irritated that I'm too slow. And funny part? I get to my destination before she does due to traffic!

But this can be overcome when more people commute. The more SAs get used to bicycles, pedestrians and motorbikes, the better for all.

And South Africans make huge generalisations.

I don't know what you guys are talking about. The last time I rode a bike in amsterdam people hooted at me and tried to drive me off the road all the way along the R65 to Ermelo....

I'll show myself out.

And I bet you didn't see a single person wearing clogs, despite the whole "everyone wears clogs" thing!
