Cyclists and runners

And in the grand scheme of things it's awesome to see so many people out doing their thing. Cycling. Running. Diving. Beaching. Coffee Shopping. Even the Harley boys were out in force.

I agree...this what i enjoy about my beachfront ride/cruise...seeing all the people out there just having fun.

I know that there is a park run along the promenade on a sat morning at 8 am so i make sure i am past sun coast by 8...or just accept that they take up the entire promenade and need to ride slowly or ride along the top section.

this is where clubs should be used to address these type of issues and a solution put forward to try accommodate everyone...one person is speechless....but many can make changes...and without 1000s of people taking to the streets...the chairperson/spokesperson for each club could represent each club both cycling and running.

On the Town Chappies route I have personally clipped 4-5 runners that were running 3 abreast, not on purpose, but thought clipping a  runner is better than clipping a bus. Also know someone that has just ploughed into them as did not expect a runner on the yellow line, he does plough into a lot of things though while  riding, so not all the runners fault.

I find the problem is with the ones with bigger numbers on their chests, like 21k etc...

if only all motorists were passionate cyclists/runners!!! our roads would be stax safer. Before I started cycling and road running, i too drove like a knob at times cursing these bloody fit people...  but i've grown a lot since  I can now see the dangers us vulnerable cyclists and runners has to put up with every day we hit the tar.

Clipped a runner on Saturday coming down Queen Victoria Rd.

Running 4 abreast.

Which I don't have a problem with, just give me some room when I cycle past.

I would have moved into the road but I could hear traffic behind me.

So apologies to the runner that was not looking, but I have to take my personal safety into consideration to.

To be fair, I have spent a lot of time on the roads around Cape Town in the past 4 years, about a ride every two days, ish.

The drivers around Cape Town are by far the most respectful, patient and decent drivers around, JHB is a mare, Durban you are a target and even on the garden route it gets dicey. (But that is during the holidays and there are a lot of GP plates around).

*You do get a box every now and then that wants to overtake and then jump on the brakes and turn left, but they are few and far between.

That road is Raaaaaaaaaaaaaaaad on a fast bike.

heard a rumour this weekend that the moron from Hout Bay Heights currently doing the Sun aft epic idiot riding around Hout Bay made it to Town from Hout Bay in 8 mins - obviously no traffic to speak of if he did that

most of the neighbourhood are just hoping that when he hits it, it will just be an object and himself.....its just a matter of when and how many pieces

Yoh!

Not guilty.

I only fulfill 1 of the 3 requirements

  • Yes I am an Idiot
  • No I've not made the trip in 8 minutes
  • No I don't live in HB heights.

This runners thing has been bugging me too, expecting me to swerve into the road where cars are giving way to them although there is a side walk right next to them.

I have notice how selfish and inconsiderate people has become in general though.

Very few still consider others anymore. It is a sad story.

I don' think it's strictly legal for runner to be runningin the service lane after bakoven. Its not a sidewalk and not intended even for pedestrians.

Cyclists by law should not be riding left of the yellow line but we do so for purposes of self preservation.

In all instances courtesy should always preside over moral high ground but the stretch from BAkoven to top of Suikerbossie is becoming really dangerous due to the number of running groups running in the service lane against the flow of traffic.

The real solution is motorists need to take care. But I can't see this happening until liability for accidents involving motorist cyclist and or runners/pedestrians is shifted to the motorist.

On the stretch of raod in question there is one speed camera so its regularly treated as 100km/hr zone especially by some pommie knob in a Audi Q7

Cyclists by law should not be riding left of the yellow line but we do so for purposes of self preservation.

This is correct.

Who knows the answer to this?

I generally..as a runner on my own...move to the left if there is no traffic and let the cyclist know that he/she must keep their lane. If there is traffic then I will move off the road to the right onto the pavement/verge. In a group we generally shift off the road to the right on the understanding that we can run in dirt but a cyclist can't. on uphills (for the cyclist) i think there is enough time for you both to see each other for everyone to adjust their position to give the cyclist the right of way

Not all runners are considerate though

Next time a hubber comes up with the brilliant idea that cyclists should cycle against the flow of traffic one should just refer them to this thread to grasp the potential confusion caused when certain road users go against the flow of traffic.

Not to pick on your post but just to demonstrate the potential confusion -   sometimes you swerve to the left and other times to the right depending on circumstances, but what if a jogger & cyclist surprise each other and both only have a split second to decide, would they be able to predict what the other one is going to do? I had a close encounter a year or so back on a very quiet back road when I was riding at high speed, surprised a jogger (on the wrong side of the road) around a sharp bend on a downhill and we both swerved towards the middle of the road to avoid each other...

Personally I hate being boxed in, so in the event that I approach a runner I hope they will move to the inside. I would still rather serve towards the road since if I'm traveling 40km+ then traffic behind me can still see me and hopefully pass giving me that legal space I need to correct myself.

However no car has ever being able to pass me going down a twisty downhill (The Glen, Chappies South Side...) So I cycle in the middle. No reason a runner should surprise me on a blind corner.

I am a runner and cyclist. We have been running more regularly in the Cradle and I must say it is all peaceful between runners, road cyclists and mountain bikers. We always run in single file if a big bunch or car is approaching.

Generally, we haven't experienced any problems. I must say it is awesome to see so many people all training together, greeting each other along the route.

Unless that runner is also in the middle of the road like you - which way is he going to swerve?A  bit of topic but my point really is the element of uncertainty introduced when someone moves against the flow of traffic.

See you run single file, so no problem. Good on you!

As with cyclist its when they start riding/running a few a breast that they start inconveniencing other users of the same piece of road and problem arise.

Typically runners want to go against traffic flow and this system seems to work best for them when they are running in very small groups in single file type formation, sticking mostly to the pavement section if that exists.

As both a runner and a cyclist I prefer running on the pavement off of the road completely as I know the frustration of not getting much space. Then the issue of against or with traffic makes no difference. That said, running along this stretch poses some real issues that are greater than simply the fact that there is no pavement! For self preservation I find the safest option is to keep crossing the road when it's safe to do so, to run on the outside corner around the various bends. Don't know how other peeps can run against traffic flow around the inside of the bends, especially on the mountain side as so many cars borrow almost the whole yellow section cutting the corners! Coming towards them really makes it a very quick reaction effort of jumping out of the road to avoid becoming a hood ornament, before a cyclist is even added to the equation!

Was going up Smitswinkel one Sunday morning to meet a runner running down... on the centre line... I may have mentioned he had a death wish...
