Okay, I run and I cycle. I was there yesterday. I have no idea who did the rerouting - I somehow missed the detour - a colleague of mine did get some extra value for money.

Wherever I encountered MTB'ers, there was no ill feeling, plenty of smiles and greetings and even met a buddy and had a nice chat. So on the trails we were all fine with each other. This thread, however has me wondering WTF is going on - are people just looking for somebody to get PO'ed at and/or having a go at?! Can't we just enjoy the trails together - it actually IS that simple! I'm out there to enjoy nature, be it on my bike or in my shoes. And I saw plenty similar minded people out there. Seems very little of that spirit is in here...? I am disappointed to think that this sounds more like a 4x4 forum talking about cyclists. So I don't quite know what's going on here, but I have never on trails come across a trail runner that's done anything to anger me when I'm riding, likewise when I'm running I am yet to meet a MTB'er hurling abuse at me, we all tend to make way and smile and mutually shout "enjoy it"!

Anyways, back to yesterday. To my knowledge our route used very little purpose-built cycling trails. I was frankly surprised to see that we were running down the rock-wall singletrack and the one above that. But it was awesome running it and I was grateful for the opportunity! Then after that we did another DH section down to the circle road. The rest was either gravel roads or hiking routes/trails.

BUT - whoever moved/misplaced the markings is a bloody idiot. It may make the headlines for the top runners for financial reasons. But the real trouble is with the non-elite guys who are in for a tough day as is. That was a bloody tough run, no doubts about that. I rested a bit at one spot and saw plenty of guys having run out of water, even gave some of mine to several guys. I agree with what somebody else has said, that is worse than rogue riding, esp with most (not speaking for myself) trail runners not knowing Jonkers all that well. If you're lost, you're lost. If that is somehow funny, then I've presumably lost my sense of humour - most likely falling off a bike somewhere.

Your point in the first main paragraph is well made. Only I trust you rightly discern when there is light-hearted banter v's' aggressive anger.

As you say, the person(s) who changes the signage is an idiot. If it was meant as a joke, it was pretty depraved. But what goes around comes around and it will definitely come back and bite him (her)!!

Compression socks?  Bleh.  I already wear enough lycra that compresses too much of my manly bits.  Baggies coming soon to my cycling kit bag.

just be warned, once you move to the dark side, you'll never go back.

When I saw the first post from Wildrunner on Twitter yesterday I thought it was pretty harsh but didn't think much would come of it!

I ran the race and loved it, the scenery was extraordinary, you don't get a sense for the expanse of the valley when you just ride it! I do have to say that all in all the event was pretty poorly organized. The announcer in the beginning (familiar voice but don't know he was) said quite abrasively "if you get lost on this course then you must be on another level of stupid" and yet one of the biggest detours happened on a hiking trail on the left hand side of the valley where I know that you can't ride, the entrance to it has steps! I think in total, besides the three checkpoints, there were maybe three marshals across the entire course (for the 38km).

And to add to the other experiences, I too saw a few MTB'ers and they were friendly and at that stage I was longing for my bike.
