"South African champion Jaco Venter made his mark on the Giro d'Italia by making the successful stage 8 breakaway. The Dimension Data rider was unable to go with eventual stage winner Gianluca Brambilla (Etixx-Quickstep), but held off the chase from the group of race favourites to finish fourth on the stage, 1:28 behind.

"I am super happy about today, it was a hard start. There was storm at the start and I wasn't planning on going in the break, I was just riding in front to stay safe. I saw some groups going on the downhill and I just followed the wheels and then I was in the group," Venter said.

"It was hard because there was a group that contained Nibali just behind us so we had to push for the first hour. We got a gap and worked well, some guys were taking some chances but we rode well. I knew the climb as we rode it in recon a few weeks ago but I wasn't expecting to stay away. I wasn't feeling too good at the start of the climb but as it went on I felt better. Over the top I was in 5th or 6th, with a small group. On the descent I did some crazy Moto GP riding and was able to race for 3rd place from a group, and I ended 2nd from that group and 4th on the stage which I am really happy about."

Venter finished just behind Moreno Moser (Cannondale), while Matteo Montaguti (AG2R La Mondiale) finished second on the stage at 1:06 from Brambilla."

Every year I think the same thing with the Giro. It's simply the best.

Yip

Like the Vuelta, it's definitely more explosive and exiting racing

More risk taking

And not to mention the scenery ????????

The choice of having a long TT on a Sunday (prime time television for grand tours - the big mountain stages are usually reserved for the weekends) really did seem strange. But then again, this is the Giro, and they never follow the script.

But this is really going to be an interesting one. So much at stake for so many people, and the GC leaderboard is going to be shuffled once again. There will be swings of minutes, not just seconds today.

Some are going to really put up their hands as genuine contenders after today. And there will also be some losers among the top names.

The possible winners today:

Will Zakarin or Dumoulin take pink today? Dumoulin needs to take 43 seconds out of Zakarin to achieve that. Too big an ask?

Uran and Nibali expected to settle into the top 5.

But look out for young Bob Jungels. He was able to limit his losses to still remain in touch with the top 5. He's just 1:21 behind the leader at the moment.

Amador will also be making a comeback today. He's an excellent time trialist.

The other one to look out for is our own Cossak from Belarus riding for Dimension Data, 'Kosta' Siutsou. He's an excellent time trialist - a multiple national champion and 10th in the 2013 Time Trial World Champs.

Kosta is only 1:38 down on GC (17th), so the Dimension Data boys will definitely be eyeing a top 10 spot on GC going into week 2.

The possible losers today:

1. Landa. He's expected to drop down quite a few spots. He's 10th on GC at the moment, but will he even be in the top 20 going into week 2?

2. Chaves

2. Majka

3. Pozzovivo

Something amusing I noticed towards the end of the coverage yesterday. A little woman in red spectating standing on the RHS kerb of the road exiting a roundabout almost had the makeup wiped off of her face by the shoulder of Brambilla as he rode past at speed. Same thing happened as the 2nd place chaser went past. By the time the first group went past she was standing up on a grassy bank well out of it!

Made me smile.

Currently 4th or something

Yeah, that flu bug is still around the engine for old Fab Fabian

Although it's been many moons since I've seen a spectacular TT from the legend
