Some parents have no sense.

How many kids get injured on jungle gyms?

How many kids get hurt climbing in trees?

Should parents refuse their kids to play on/in them in fear of what MIGHT happen and then be labeled as a bad parent?

Life is a risk. You can try and protect them as much as you like but the risk is there that one day your boy/girl slips and hits his/her head and that can leave them mentally handicapped or dead.

Never said that parents should refuse their kids to play on grounds of what might happen. But as a parent you can at the very least try to minimize the risk where appropriate. Playing on a jungle gym and riding on dad's shoulders on a bike too small for him while being pulled by dogs does not quite carry the same risk factor.

There are obviously always at least two schools of thought in this type of issue. Like everything else in life, it is virtually impossible to convince one or the other to change his/her thinking. Until something happens and its too late.

Enough said.

I laugh when I see threads like this,

I'm torn between I don't want my kids to get hurt, but as a naughty little **** some of my wounds and clever ideas I survived perfectly

When I was five ran straight forehead first into steel frame of the bathroom door playing catches ,,13 stitches later and a mother of a hiding from pops when he got home

I ran over a 210l rusted drum cut in half taking the skin off both my shins and knees, I stayed in the bathroom in fear of pops long enough to pass out from bleeding

I used to steal my dads 250cc scrambler before my feet touched the ground ride around the neighborhood with out a helmet again my sisters helped me there, stole my moms car when ever they went away from std 7!

Smashed a merc once at my dads garage that was there for a repair,,,,I can tell you a fan belt to the ass is not something you forget quickly

I nearly cut off my finger while carving a ketty with pops wood working machine,,,I'm guessing you know what I got, stitches and ,,,,,,,,I think a plakkie to my ass

I'll rather not go into the drinking stories and what followed

Loooong story short parents are becoming waaayyyy to protective myself included, my first concussion off a bike was std 5 no helmet no shirt covered in roasties on the tar

But my kids don't dare go near a bike on grass without a helmet,,, hypocrite I know but they my babas

And many years later those are still of your fondest memories.

I think they were having fun. Leave them to it.

Yeah and end of the day doesn't matter how reckless some people may think it is, that child will remember that day dad and her and the dogs went for a ride and they will laugh about it.

There's probably a story behind it.. and it will probably be a funny matter. . Dad, kid and dogs go for a ride.. kid rides bike, dad walks with the dogs.. kid maybe gets tired from all the fun or maybe fell and was a bit sore.. so innovative dad reckons well the quickest way home is hop on my shoulders, I'll ride your bike and someone has to hold on to the dogs to get them home too.

Actually now that I think about it if the OP was so concerned , why didn't the OP offer to help or find out what the story was. .. but nope... rush home and go rant on the hub.

Some ;)

The fan belt amongst others not so much,,,,my dad believed in the nearest "weapon" in the immediate surrounding area,,,he beat the living crap out of me and I got no issues about it, now stern words are considered abuse

Some kids were skateboarding in the complex parking - I chirped the one kid saying - what no helmets - he's response was " No this is extreme skate boarding " - with the biggest grin on his face - not  my kids - told them have fun.

I chopped off the tip of my finger as a kid while sticking my finger into the drivetrain while spinning the pedals - I learned not to do that again.  :whistling:

Ha ha.. imagine that..

I once chopped the top off my toe while swinging . ...suppose it was my mom's fault cause I was barefoot. .

Never mind all those times we used to go play on the train tracks.. my kids look at me with big eyes when I tell them of all the stuff we used to do.. and we survived. .

The worst that would happen is some loss of skin . or some stitches, maybe a broken arm or leg.

The biggest hiding I ever got was when we went to the quarry to go play kleilat and I didn't get a hiding because I went to play kleilat. . I got a hiding cause I ruined my church clothes..

Yes life is different and yes some things we just can't let our kids go do, not out of fear of them hurting themselves but out of fear of someone else hurting them.

But shees let the kids have fun.

On Friday night we had such a laugh cause the kids down the road had decided to play toktokkie. .every dog in the neighbourhood went nuts and what a lovely sound it was hearing all the kids laugh.

First claim paternity, then pay arrears maintenance and only after that feign indignation with how other people interact with your kid(s)

dearly,

a parent

So, by your logic, nobody can interfere or comment about anything that does not involve their own kids?

And that's more or less how it should be.

Unless there is illegal/real negligence going on - it's none of anybodies business.

But this is the internet and here we love to point fingers, cast stones and take offense - hell it's only exercise some people get in a day!

Hmmm commentary would probably be welcomed if it was positive but like I said - this is the internet so it's all about showing other people's flaws....

So everyone should stay indoors and play video games as it is safer?

No one knows if the dogs are well trained or not? You never seen a dad carry a kid on his shoulders walking?... could quite as easy trip and fall...

I guess it is too easy to point fingers.... so what you going to do next.... call social services for something you deem it is inappropriate?

Is why the world is becoming such a nanny state.

I once saw an article that the basic context of it was in 1945 teenagers went off to war, now you cannot say anything as you may hurt their feeling and they are likely to grow up disfunctional...

Must be a slow sunday ;)

Agree to a point..... Especially the pointing fingers bit. However, as you said, there is a line and the right of a parent to decide what's right for the child should never supersede the right of the child to be safe or the rights of others not to be interfered with.

Where we live now, people frown because my kids go barefoot in summer, ride motorbikes and can shoot guns. That is none of their business. However, if I decide to smoke in the car with my kids, neglect their health or beat them black and blue, then be damn sure that it is right for someone to intervene

I still see kids standing on the front seats in cars. Everyday. Mom/Dad driving, sometimes on their phones even. Blows my mind.

There is a prime example of where the parent does not have that right
