TheJ Posted May 23, 2016 Posted May 23, 2016 Both are great sportsmen, obviously super strong and super fit. But, I like Julian more... you never hear of the guy. He doesn't put out videos of his life and training every other week. Just quietly gets it done. Soft spoken mannerism. I like that.
robsc Posted May 23, 2016 Posted May 23, 2016 did anyone see how much his bike flexed in that slow mo reply Did you see his rear wheel sliding as he was coming out the corner in the final sprint ? Almost "MotoGPish"

I like that.Agree, phenomenal athlete...no showing off etc...I am a nino guy however. Gave burry huge respect before and after his passing...he was also one of the few guys that took his helmet off for chainsaw's minute of silence....RESPECT. But back to the point...I don't think Julian can beat him at the moment...as fit as he is. The only guy I have seen put rivots into nino is a strong coolharvey...

rock Posted May 23, 2016 Posted May 23, 2016 If you ask me, Julian was undergeared in that sprint. In the slo-mo, Nino was pedalling slightly slower, and was obviously pulling up next to Julian. Absalon should have dropped one gear more before the sprint. Sram's 10t vs Shimano's 11t? I'd also bet Nino had a larger chainring, seeing that he's on 12sp Eagle.
Gen Posted May 23, 2016 Posted May 23, 2016 did you see fontana looking for pennies at the one feed zone....kekekkeeRissved (?) takes the wipe out award. she fell hard.. Also her ride to finish 2e.. gets her the person of the day award.
dev null Posted May 23, 2016 Posted May 23, 2016 No amount of gearing would have helped Julien. You just have to see how much more muscle Nino has on his legs compared to Julien. If Julien want to win, he has to put at least a buffer of 10 seconds into Nino at the last climb.

Fisan Posted May 23, 2016 Posted May 23, 2016 But Nino did pull the old drafteroo. I'm just wondering how different would things could have been if the roles were reversed and Nino lead out to the start of the sprint finish? Surely that draft gave him a bit of advantage. But on the other hand, to advance more than a bike's length in such a short distance does take a ish-load of power!!

BikeRadar showed his new setup to include a 38T - and sometimes a 40T up front edit: 'anyone want to count this? http://ep1.pinkbike.org/p5pb13512285/p5pb13512285.jpg

If Nino was in front there wouldn't have been a sprint... he would've dropped him on the descent Seen it time and time before.. when he so chooses too he drops most of them on the descent
Odinson Posted May 23, 2016 Posted May 23, 2016 I agree with what the commentators said during the race in that it must be a frustrating time to compete at the sharp end of the XCO scene. With Absalon and Schurter dominating, everyone else is just scrambling for that last step on the podium.

Albstadt wasn't as technical as some of the other courses, but Absalon really stepped up his game with his technical skillz. Not Nino good. But good. I think this season's going to be a much closer match than last year's.

If Julien want to win, he has to put at least a buffer of 10 seconds into Nino at the last climb. The size of the muscles matter almost nothing. If I recall, this guy was sitting with the leaders for quite some time. And Andy Schlek might also have an opinion on leg size. http://www.veloveritas.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2014/07/29/comm-games14-mtb-men/Comm+Games+14+Men+05+Ferguson+5.jpg On the hills they were equally strong. Coming out of someone's slip is much easier if they have been leading out for 100m.

nathrix Posted May 23, 2016 Posted May 23, 2016 What a race, the fight to the end between Julien Absalon and Nino Schurter had me on the edge of my seat! Deep down I wanted Julien Absalon to win, but it was a deserved win for Nino Schurter, machine! Impressed with Coolharvey's form on his return to racing after he's injury.
