Disappointing Bike Shops

I am in the market for a better cassette for my road bike. Last week I went onto the websites of 4 bike shops. 3 in Durban and 1 in Cape Town. I filled in the little online form that promises they will get back to you.

So far only 1 shop replied to me. Now the unhappiness stems from the fact that these places obviously are doing so well that they can ignore requests from potential customers. The anger I feel is directed at the next LBS owner or operator that even tries to complain about dwindling sales and how everyone is moving to online stores.

I am not surprised with customer service like that. Why even bother with the contact us form in that case?

Have now ordered the part needed from Chain Reaction cycles since the local shops couldn't be bothered to reply to an email

Yep... typical South African service.... they don't care or go the extra mile unless you're in their face..

It's not just bike shops. I've had similar experiences with other shops as well. Phone for quotes or a general inquiry and they never get back to you. It's as if people have enough business and money to not worry about you. But we all know that's not the case, so wtf?

You cannot jump around from shops to shops. They don't like it The best part is support one shop and build relationship. They will help you and get job done for you.

I remember a while back, I need one part and they did not have stock, so he took it off from new bike for me. Wow!

Paul @ Melville Cycles and the ChainWorx gang are fantastic. Don't settle for shitty service simply because its Durban.

Never actually used them, but if their responses on Twitter to queries I had about something I wanted to do last year are anything to go by, I'd give these okes business in Durbs.

Its not just Durban. Come to Gauteng, we have the champions of poor service here. Patronizing arrogant bike shop (using the term loosely of course) owners that resort to insulting and threatening customers long after said customers became ex-customers.

Paul is great. Does not reply to website though.  I now contact him direct.

Still waiting for replies from Chainworx x2.  Supposed to phone back........

Bike shops (usually) have cyclist employees.

Nuff said.

True story but thats where it ends mostly.

They know how to pedal and not much else

why do POTENTIAL customers think they derserve a red carpet rolled out when all they've done is send an email...?!

I dont think the op was looking for red carpet treatment. He was simply looking for a reply via a feature the bike shops offer on their web site?

If they publish an email, or have an enquiry form then they have a duty to respond, even if its to say they are too busy for you.

So December whilst on leave, I decided I am going to buy a new Ford Kuga. Off to the dealer I go, spend enough time looking at the car on the floor (which was sold) to decide stuff it, I don't need to test drive it, I want one!

So I speak to salesman, and tell him how stoked I am to be buying this new car, and that I want it in white, with limited edition  mags and all the bells and whistles he can add. Nice. Get the second hand sales man to make an offer on my current VW Polo, which I also bought new. Cool. I am told to go enjoy lunch, email will be ready in the hour for the order and quote.

It's May...

I'm still waiting...

You can do exactly that. If you don't receive acceptable service then do the smart thing. Save yourself loads of pain and money and go elsewhere. Same with motor vehicles and you don't have to be pals with the dealer principal to receive service. Vote with your wallet.
