As of 10 minutes ago, I have restocked all the XLAB shelves.

And there are a few new products too.

Thanks ICM. How are the GP4000s to change a puncture? I still battle a little to get the tyre off the rim with the softer Rubinos. Do you think there is a major difference between the two? Could just be a matter of practice.

And I would love race wheels, but got to save for that tri bike. Hehehe.

I got them on my race wheel set and they are a toight fit. But think that’s more due to the wheel set than the tyres. . Brilliant tyres.

Where I live roads are shocking so use cheaper contis on training set.

A good set of wheels will transform the S2 to a monster. See if you can lend a set just to try.

GP4000 only tyres I use for training and racing, no problem fitting.... probably just need to practice.

You not bought the bike yet???..... what's the point of a fancy tri bike if you don't have race wheels ;) ..... must have hehehehe

I have been in this for 11 months, and I have spent so much money already. When I add it all up, it's quite a scary figure for something that is a hobby. Hubby is supportive, but it also feels like it's reaching a point where I am pushing it too much. There is also the fact that I don't really want to be riding around on a fancy Canyon, and I am slow as molasses. If I average 25km/ph, it's a really good day. Sorry, no offense to anyone out there.

The Canyon Speedmax WNM 7.0 CF is my dream bike (even if it's just entry level), and I will carry on working towards it. One day that beauty will be mine.

Thanks ICM. Will look around to borrow or maybe hire a set. They also look fast and fancy - which always helps with motivation.

The money spend never ends.  I thought cycling was expensive untill I started tri's.

Work towards your dream bike and do not worry what others think.  You put in the hours and dedication so deserve to treat yourself as and when you can

As for speed, you will see a difference once you are on a tri bike and aero :)

Do not discount Chinese race wheels, fraction of cost and many of us ride them (often wheels rebranded).... just read https://community.bikehub.co.za/topic/128083-chinese-carbon-wheels/?hl=chinese+carbon+wheel

I think I might have reached the end of my triathlon days.

I did a race yesterday, was just a sprint so nothing special.

The problem was I just didnt enjoy it much, triathlon seems to be dying out in EL and there were less than 50 people who entered the race. The who spirit and vibe around it wasnt there either which is a shame.

When I first started doing them around 12 years ago we had tons of people entering and it had a great vibe but over the years I have noticed the events thinning out. My friends who I used to do them with have all left SA too which doesnt help with the fun factor.

It really seems to be a case of most people got into it and did a lot of racing, did a few 70.3's and then got over it. I honestly didnt think that would happen to me but I think Im at that point now.

Sorry to hear. There is nothing wrong with not enjoying the sport. We are supposed to do this for fun, and it's important to keep this in mind.

I do think the sport is really expensive, and with the economy slumping as badly it is, it is not surprising that the sport will take a hit. Maybe look for other events to join. Running in SA is massive, and I find all the running events I do to be awesome.

Yup running is definitely still going strong, I do at least 10 running races a year and there are far more of them available. I really hope its just a slump, triathlon has always been my first love and the various running, swimming and cycling races I did around it were really just to boost my tri ability.

Will probably spend the next year or so focusing on running and see how things go from there.

Sorry to hear that too... but if it’s not fun and does not make you feel good (in whatever way) then what’s the point.

I do think you’ve raised some pertinent issues in your review of how you’ve come to this point:

-is being a triathlete about the racing, or the training, or both? I’ve recently added swimming & riding to the low-key running I was already doing to become a triathlete, and my training has stepped up a level and I love it. Although I mostly train alone, a lot of what I’m enjoying about triathlon is the exercise-focused lifestyle and the camaraderie amongst triathletes; consider joining a real or virtual training group for some of your training.

-we all need to be part of, and add to, the positive vibe, or run the risk of our ‘Cinderella’ sport shrinking further and becoming unsustainable; we can do this by being inclusive when encouraging & supporting each other (especially new entrants), by entering your local events, by volunteering when we are not racing. Be a value-adder, not a consumer.

-you have done well to stay motivated and involved for 12 years; the skills, fitness & healthy lifestyle you’ve developed in that time will stand you in good stead going forward; I’d suggest trying to improve at which ever discipline you enjoy the most for the next 4-6 months, pick a goal event and review again after that.

IM events are terribly expensive. For around the same price as a 70.3, I can book myself on a 5 day, 5 scuba dive trip. I think the competition from the Ultra events is a good thing. The events just need more people.

These are all good points, but triathlon is not an easy hobby. Besides the expense, there is the constant drive to improve, and the hours are long. We do tend to put a lot of a pressure on ourselves. Well, I know I do, and my training partners do. We even put pressure on each other to perform or not miss training. The sport can also get quite lonely and requires a lot of time away from family and friends. A break or change is not a bad thing. Triathlon will always be there. I do know once I am done with a full IM, I will change focus to Comrades to change it up a little.
