Buying a GPS - tax deductible?

Hubbers,

I pay provisional tax, so i can claim a bunch of things from tax including computer cellphone etc.

Thinking of getting a GPS mainly for hiking and perhaps on the bike, but also need it to locate clients and determine locations on the fly. I work in agriculture and now and then need GPS locations of dams, pumps and pipes. And i get lost in the sticks on a weekly basis.

Is this a good enough reason to claim a GPS buy from tax? A bit of a mock-friday off topic but hey its a bright spark and i actually need the device to hike the Drakensberg.

Looking forward to hear from the Tax Tims out there

Yes bike-specific is probably a stretch. Havent looked at options yet, just got the idea now. Tax-deductible shopping is s sideline hobby of mine

As a business owner I'm all for tax deductible shopping.

It helps that I married a CA who is passionate about helping small businesses save money

This phrase hurt me. But I will overlook it.

The deductibility of any expenditure hinges on a close causal link between that expenditure and the income producing activities of the taxpayer. You seem to have proved that you can create a link between generating income and the associated expenditure.

The next issue is the nature of the expenditure, is this a capital acquisition? I would argue yes, which means you be leaning towards a capital allowance over a number of years rather than a revenue deduction in terms of section 11(a).

Or, if the GPS unit is less than R7000, then just claim the full value of the asset as a deduction in the year of acquisition.

Just hypothesizing here.

You sound like my wife when I wanted to buy a bike through the business.

I only cite one phrase when it comes to buying a new bike

"n+1"

Tell your wife to go suck it. (No disrespect, I'm sure your wife is lovely)

I am sure that some of the dams and places you need to go is only reachable by foot or bicycle.  I am sure you can throw in a nice dual suspension bike in the basket as well.  I man has to get to work to work.

Wait, does everyone not claim their bikes as a tax deduction for advertising?

Keep these ideas rolling boys.  I am writing down as you speak.

If the dams and places you visit are SO remote you need a GPS to locate them, and a Dual sus to reach them, you sure as hell will need a dedicated battery backup, hydration pack, survival spares and 2 bike services a year....all in the name of revenue generation.

Dont want you to get lost and not work for a whole month whilst bundoe-bashing to a remote dam... :whistling:

Actually a good idea - a company should in fact have n+1 branded/logo-ed bikes that they give out for free useage as advertising platform.
