Changing the format of a triathlon

How should race organisers accommodate athletes when they change a triathlon to a duathlon?

They have changed the Lux 70.3 tomorrow to a duathlon because the river is flooded. Some of the athletes have asked to swop their entry for another race in Europe or the SA 70.3 and were turned down.I can see their argument as some are from UK,USA  one guy is from Cape Town and it's damn expensive to come back next year . One guy said he wanted a medal with a run and not a swim as that was fraud :whistling:

Organisers said that they will carry entries over to 2017 race if requested but will not give a refund either.

The bike course is pretty hard so the extra 5km run could be a killer for some athletes.

Its rough and I would be really bleak - esp if travelled far - but when you enter you know (or should know) this is always a possibility, and its written into the rules.  If the swim is cancelled on safety grounds, the organisers cannot be blamed or penalised by having to refund etc.

in the interest of athlete safety that is the right call. imagine the chaos if someone is hurt or worse. that's the risk we take and no one can control the weather.

to add, I cant remember how many triathlons I have done maybe 20 or 30 and never has the format had to be changed so the time when it does happen one must just be philosophical about it.

They cant be anry as it is in the rules that you agree to and accept when you enter. Its one of the things none of us wants, but it os there for the safety of the athletes. And a duathlon is much harder IMHO.

So the river is in flood or is it just the fun police? If there is a serious current Do people really expect to swim upstream in a lap course?

this is a webcam on the river, I don't think anyone attempting a swim in it at the moment will have much choice on the direction they swim....

Definetly not safe for a triathlon.... Unlucky for the athletes.

A 5 km run in wet suites should be equal compensation

Ja...theres no way anyone is swimming in that unless they want a trip to Cologne.

With the rain at the moment they may need a wetsuit for that 5km.

What did they do at the Lux 70.3 for the swim Gummi?

Did they have any drafting issues with no swim to help split the field?

Saw a video of the Durban pro swim start, sea did not look that rough to me....but it was only a 9 second video of the start

Took the pro's 7min to round the first buoy in Dbn

Video and pics don't do the conditions justice

I assume a little like this:

The waves were only part of it, apparently massive rip tide running as well; pros were battling to stay on course, two of them dnf. Life savers were nervous just looking after this handful of athletes.

But I agree Gummi, a 5 or 7.5 k run at the startbat least to stagger the field.
