Getting dizzy during races

Any event that i do that is a bit longer i get dizzy. (light-headed/dronk) The first time it happened was at K2C last year second time Argus and now it seems every time i ride a longer event it happens.

I will be fine and then all of a sudden i would get very dizzy, so much so that i cannot stay on my bike. The first time it happened after i took a GU and the second time it happened after i downed a glass of coke at a water table.

I then thought it was a sugar rush. (I generally cut out sugar out of my diet except for the odd chocolate or so but i dont add any to coffee etc.) so i started excluding any sugar except for my USN energy drink when riding. This did not solve my problem. Before this crap started in september last year i could eat jelly babies/koeksisters and Gu's every 40 mins without issue.

It happened again on saturday at the trailseeker in grabouw. I was going lekker slow as to ensure i would have enough in me to finish it. And at the 40k mark (3 hrs-ish - yeah i went very slow) i stopped at a water point and again it hit me. It was just before we started with the A trail of A to Z. I couldnt keep my bike up right in the single track. It kind of feels like it happens just after i stopped at a water table or for what ever reason.

More information, i am big guy high end of 120kilos without gear. I can avg high 170bpm HR for quite a while - any ride shorter than 40k otherwise i try and pace a bit better. (had an avg of low 160s saturday) I rode with my camelbak saturday filled with water and had one bottle i refilled twice but at the time it happend i had 2x750ml bottles of USN enduro + 1 tablet USN hydrator in each bottel. I ate about 2 slices of banana bread which my wife made with nothing on it. (dont know how much sugar was in the bread)

Also once this has happened to me it takes about half an hour or so then it disappears. But i feel completely drained and dead afterwards with NO energy.

Could it be my sugar is actually dropping too low? I initially thought this at the argus this year and kept sipping on a gu trying to get sugar up but i THINK it actually just made me feel worse.

Has anyone come across this before, any doctor or someone with some medical knowledge that can offer some light on this subject, i am doing w2w this year and i cannot let this crap happen to me then. Also i have had vertigo in the past but that usually takes a day or two too pass so i doubt if its that?!

It may be insulin resistance, so despite eating/not eating sugar (and liver producing from stored glycogen), the cells aren't sensitive to being unlocked by insulin to absorb sugar - given that you're a big guy, you may have components of metabolic syndrome. Make an appointment with your doc NOW!

Ask for a full physiological check up. Cardiovascular, respiratory, gastro-intestinal and if you're over 35 years old, have a rectal (it's not that bad).

Also ask for lipogram, Haemoglobin (anaemia can make one dizzy) and blood sugar (HbA1c is the test for long term check). The doc will probably do some others as he sees fit.

Don't be shy to ask for a THOROUGH assessment - if he/she doesn't perform a clinical examination and touch you and take your blood pressure, he/she is a *** doctor. This is your life and this assessment will probably change your lifestyle for the better.

On that note, a message to ALL HUBBERS reading this:

No medical intervention (drugs/surgery/supplements/etc) is better than good lifestyle choices and disease prevention.

Straight to your GP.  Do not leave it any longer as you are already dragging it for far too long since you have identified this issue back in September already. Get it sorted soonest. Best wishes and may your next post be one with very good news.

Jeeze why everyone on the doc wagon...

I have had 2 discovery health checks since september without anyone noticing anything. I keep a close eye on my blood pressure as well, have my own machine at home and when i rest it goes to normal. Keeping in mind i am over weight/obese according to BMI.

I visited a sports scientistsststs last month and did a fitness test hooked up to all the machines and he didn't mention anything...

Im 30 years old, mom has high blood pressure (hence why i keep an eye on myself) and my dad had his first stents put in in January but before that no other history.

Do you really think its necessary to go see a doc and get everyone excited about being a bit dizzy?

Could still be an insulin issue. Ask your doc for a metabolic syndrome check-up: Waist obesity, blood pressure, lipogram and blood sugar (not just a rapid test).

If you're a smoker and regular drinker, it's going to make things more susceptible.

There are a multitude of things that could cause dizziness, from sugar to oxygen supply to the brain. If there are no obvious things that you know of, I would also recommend a visit to the Doc, if nothing else, just to tell you that all your main systems are ok.

Go see the doctor

And that ladies and gents is why docs are riding Porches and us mortals Tatas.

I am not a big doc fan myself.

If I had listened to my doctor on my previous visit, I would had one less appendix while the 7mm kidney stone would still have tried to kill me........

This after a thorough exam by the local house kwak and a visit to the "specialist".......

Ive made an appointment. And yes Spinnekop i am with you on this. But also rather be safe than sorry, if i die my wife will sell my bikes for way too little. So its in the best interest of my bikes as well.

Thanks for the advice guys! Will report back with a full report telling you all i passed everything except the fat test.

Ja. Punt.

Jy het net een lyf. As die dokter se ons is verkeerd en dat niks fout is met jou nie het jy ten minste gemoedsrus.

Good call lerouc

We need to be cautious some times because ultimately our well being is in our hands, no matter how well meaning people can be.

Illustration:

There was a farmer who had ducks. One day, he noticed that a couple of the ducks lay dead on the ground. He went to the local Quack and asked him for his advice. the Quack asks: "Do you feed them on the water or on the ground?", the farmer says: "the ground". Quack says: "Thant's you problem! Feed them on the water!". So he goes away and feeds them on the water. Next day, 2 more dead.. Goes back to the Quack: My ducks are still dying!" Quack: "Do you feed them at night or in the morning?" "At night" says the farmer. "Well, that's your problem! you must feed them in the morning!" So he goes away and feeds them in the morning. 2 days later all the ducks are dead. He goes back to the quack and tells him. Quack says: "That's a pity, I had lots more good advice for you!"

(I remember being told something like this by a wise man once)
