Is this a crack

This crack requires closer inspection to determine if it is dangerous or not.

Jip. It's definitely double if not more inspection stuff.

seriously for a moment

if you watch this video (which is very interesting) you will see that there is a join node in the frame carbon manufacturing process just about exactly where the OP has his clear coat crack ( straight lines can indicate a crack in carbon )

he really needs to take it to a pro and get it checked before he rides it

Small planes have to be checked periodically and wings are x-rayed for cracks.

Go to nearest small airfield and ask who does that kind of thing for them.

Have them check it out - peezy!

Washed my bike today after Hazeldean. Picked this up while cleaning. This is on my Big.Nine, rear chain-stay on the break side. Looks like something impacted there, possibly a stone.

Since it is on the "break side" - I would not take any chances - if it was on the other side it would not break even if it was a crack

I had a GT Zaskar some years ago that showed similar cracks on the chainstay, close to the wheel end of it.

According to GT this was where the aluminium dropouts were inserted into the carbon frame.

GT chose to replace the frame. Twice.

However. From the time I informed Omnico till the time they replaced the frame (typical Omnico) was about 6 months. Nothing broke, cracks did not get worse.

I have now chosen rather to check for rust on a steel frame as opposed to cracks on a carbon frame.

Very cool video - CF really is modern scientific art! Wonder whether we'll see carbon reinforced plastic on bikes in the future?

Carbon crack?

I think it's more than likely just a public hare on your camera lens.

Take it to Paul at Procycles or Greg at PG Carbon .

They will advise .

That's very cool. But a lot of that footage appeared to be construction of Scultura. They say them selves that several different molds are used for different bikes. A BIG.NINE may not have a join in that location.

Showed it to Greg at P&G. He is leaning to it being a crack. Problem is with my frame you can't see the fibers underneath as my frame has like a black paint or black lacquer over it. So you can't see through to the fibers.

My shop also aren't 100% sure, but also leaning to it being a crack.

Merida has five year warranty on their frames. This bike is three years old. Send it in?

Under warranty? Then send it in for sure!

If the shops lean on it a lot, it will almost certainly crack!

If it is a possible warranty claim, why take a chance? Send it in and have it looked at. Rather be safe than have it break when out of warranty.

So Greg at P&G repair can't confirm. My LBS can't confirm and Merida THEMSELVES can't confirm. They tell me there is no way to tell for sure as the lacquer or paint that is on the frame covers the fibers from sight. So either 1. X-ray. Or 2. Strip the paint and see what lies underneath.
