What is the biggest bike and/or bike gear buy mistake you have made?

Mongoose Maurice single speed because it looked the business.

- The chainring was eccentric about the crank axle. It would have needed a long chain with a tensioner to turn

- The spoke holes in the rim were not even deburred  so when you inflate the tyre they cut through the rim tape and the tube

- Urban bike geometry is something else

There is a reason some bikes cost less than a mid level wheelset. It still hasn't been outside in more than a year.

Lekker, the offer stays open   And zero offence taken, we were the ones at fault...

Can I bring some old trashed Anatomic shorts around for a free replacement? perhaps not exactly new....

Sorry Andrew, but my worst purchase was Anatomic bibs beginning last year. It seems that the majority of Anatomic bibs are designed so that it looks like you have made a proper number2 oops (sh@ in it) The chamois sags a lot at the back, it is loose fitting. This ends in a lot of chaving where you really don't want to...

The only identification on the bib is "tycoon knit" and "ergonomic". It has an orange chamois. I had to buy it as my club decided on using branded Anatomic bibs.

And for the record - I have a proper boesman gat. And I do pull the bib up as much it allows you to without suffering a cameltoe (and I am a guy...)

Disclaimer.... not looking for any freebies. Just want to know if the design is still the same, or has it changed.

Fair enough... bibs are personal things, fit is crucial and none of us are ever really built the same, so some will work, some won't.

I use the Ergonomic padding, it's not the smallest (neither am I), but 9 days on a hardtail at joBerg2c without issue certainly suggests they work for me. Also, not knowing the details of your club kit, I can only assume it was printed - which unfortunately weakens the quality of the lycra a fair bit as you lose a good portion of lycra to Polyester - so that's it's possible to print on it.

The Ergonomic padding has been updated - they've actually reverse engineered the whole thing... so it's a bit more flexible, but still a similar size. If you're looking for a smaller padding, the Platinum model just above it has gel inserts and is a fair bit narrower. Fitting again though is everything.

Mongoose Tyax Elite (my first MTB). The sportsmans salesman had me at disc brakes

Still in my garage, bike was heavy and way too big for me.

Busy sorting it out for my gardener, he stays close enough not to suffer from riding it.

MTB. I used it twice. Once a roadie, always a roadie. I'm an aesthetics snob: classic steel roadbike with curvaceous drops, not a big lumbering barge with straight bars.

I have a list

  • My first set of maxxis Crossmarks. (didnt know they had to be LUST to run tubeless)
  • Saddlebag
  • Avid Juicy Ultimate (need I say more)
  • Ashima PCB Pistonless brakes. (Almost worse than the Avids)
  • Carbon Spez Stumpy, (was pretty but never actually had fun on it)
  • Carbon Silverback MTB for the wife. Honestly think she has done 40km on it in 3 years.
  • All the riding kit for the wife.
  • 29er Carbon frame that used BB30 and the XX crank to go with it. I'm heavy on Bearings, they lasted about 500km.
  • Bontrager MTB shoes, both Ratchets broke  within 1 year.
  • OLD Anatomic bibs. Were good for 1 ride.

They are my worst purchase ever. They are much worse than any Avids (or any other brake) I have ever owned. I still have the set I bought for my wife because my conscience won't allow me pass on this pos to my worst enemy.

I still have nightmares about all the tech trails the wife rode with those things.I couldn't understand why she had become such a slow rider every time a bit a gravity appeared. I mean she has podiumed at the Mankele Avalanche before... Then one day I had to test ride her bike to adjust gears  :cursing:

Biggest mistake was buying "boring" coloured wheels and components.

Black hope hubs

Black rims

Black bars

That moment when someone else comes past and his bike looks waaay too similar to yours. Makes me sad sometimes.

Mark I tried to steer you towards the blue right up till the last moment

I came across one locked with a chain at the mall some weeks back.

When I went back more recently, it was still there...

This was the first bike I had.  I was still fat and unfit when I peddled that lunk of lead up Sani pass.  I needed serious pain meds after that.

Come to think of it,  mine was not the "elite" I had caliper brakes
