Hi guys.

Anybody have any good recommendations for a saddle? One that I can actually sit for 60km+ on? Not a weight weenie so doesn't have to be fancy carbon or the like. It's for my hardtail, my current saddle is fine doing the trails when I stand often but it's the part where I take to the road that kills my behind... thanks

It is very different from person to person and also a matter of conditioning.  If you are not used to sitting for 60km+ any saddle will bite you.  I would suggests going to a LBS with a variety of saddles and see if they do not have ones that you can test with.

I would suggest you go via shop with decent fitting capabilities - Specialised stores have a device to measure the width of your sitbones, and that's the start information you need - this will save you from getting the saddle width incorrect - but you will still need to find one that works for you.

This service might also be available from other stores with fitting capability - like www.cyclefit.co.za

Don't bother with other people's recommendations. Each person is different. Have your sit bones measured and then experiment with different saddles. There are shops with test saddles where you can try before you buy.

Just as a matter of interest those saying get a test saddle and try it out, what would you consider a good 'test' (how far, for how long) to be sure that it's OK?

I really struggled to find a saddle, and the discomfort within the first few km's told me the test saddle wasn't a fit. The saddle I ended up buying was tested over a couple of longish rides. When I realised after 30 km's that was wasn't thinking about the pain in my butt I knew I had a winner

I did exactly that. Had a 143 and as it turns out I need a 155, made a huge difference.

We have test saddles...and I recommend trying a few before purchasing. And long rides are recommended. Saddles have become so pricey, you need to be sure what you are buying is what you need.

What test saddles do you guys have? Do you have one of those tests to measure your sit bones?

Saddles being so damn expensive is also the problem. I can't afford to buy a few just to realise they don't suite me. A good friend borrowed me 2 for testing and already after using it today for a 30km ride to work I know this one is not the one for me either.

Also be aware that even with a perfect saddle fit your @ss still needs to adapt to being in the same position for such a long time.  It takes time and many miles on the saddle before your bum gets more used to long rides...but yeah, its important to get the correct measurement for your saddle (some brands also look at how flexible you are, like Fi'zi:k).
