dirtypot Posted July 20, 2016 Posted July 20, 2016 I'm loving my current combo - fast rolling Saguaro on the rear and a grippy confidence inspiring Mitas Kratos on the front.
Christofison Posted July 20, 2016 Posted July 20, 2016 I'm just going to sound like an echo but..... Maxxis Crossmark are great for racking up the kay's and are some of the strongest tyres you'll find, but they are not very grippy on anything but hardpack gravel. Next options I would recommend are Maxxis Ikon, Ardent Race and Vittoria Saguaro. This bunch will not last as long as the Crossmark, but will offer better grip with relatively good strength. I would personally like to give the new Crossmark 2 a go, it looks like it might offer better grip than the normal Crossmark with the same strength and hopefully durability. Sent from my S40 using TapatalkCheck the Crossmark II specs out on the Maxxis website. I think they are lighter with more grip and not as tough. So I don't think they'll last as long. Edit: I was wrong. The Crossmark II weights pretty much the same as it's equivalent Crossmark I. But it is not available in the LUST casing and there is no option of 2.25".
AndreV Posted July 20, 2016 Posted July 20, 2016 Also in the market for new tyres. Both my Specialized Fast Tracks gave up on me.I see that CWC has the Vittoria Saguaro on special. How is that as a front tire? i see they say it's in between grippy and fast rolling so might work up front and back?

It's terrible as a front tyre. I was running them front and rear and thought that it was ok, until I put on something grippier and realised how bad it really was. It's a great rear tyre, but pair it with something chunkier - even a Barzo is great.

Some people do use it at both ends, but it is more of a back tire. Done close to 5000km on mine now (including J2C) and it is getting close to replacement now. Good combo is Vittoria Barzo up front, Saguaro at the back.
nonky Posted July 20, 2016 Posted July 20, 2016 Why not the Grid casing? According to the website its only 30g heavier than the Control, weighing in at 650g. If you really need the extra protection and can find one, go for it! (grid used to be quite rare in SA) The control casing is available everywhere and the tyres are still less than ZAR600, IIRC. [PS: i saw a lot of grid casings at Kalahari Challenge and that terrain eats tyres for breakfast.]
AndreV Posted July 20, 2016 Posted July 20, 2016 Thanks for the info guys. I see CWC has both on special so opted for the Barzo and Saguaro for front and back.

JXV Posted July 20, 2016 Posted July 20, 2016 Maxxis CrossMark is the best all rounder!...this is true.....for perfectly straight dry roads only..... Sent from my SM-G900F using Tapatalk

davetapson Posted July 20, 2016 Posted July 20, 2016 I've been running Conti's (race king) for a few years now, but the last two has let me down spectacularly. Both times the side wall failed. At R 800 to a R 1000 a pop (pun intended) I've got no further interest in using conti's. So I'm in the market for a new brand. (I've had Schwalbe before and was not impressed) I do mainly marathon type riding so longevity and rolling resistance trumps grip. But the tyre should allow for occasional rough stuff. Thanks Yep - same problem for me. Migrated through a few combo's, ended up on Spec Ground Control + Spec Fast Trak. Don't let the name put you off (hey, I put them on a GT) - they cheap (relatively), faster rolling than anything else equivalent, good grip, last amazingly long. No sidewall issues. Edit: and now I see the post above. I've had no probs. Been using them for years. I use Joes / Ryder sealants out of choice. May make a diffs.
AlanD Posted July 20, 2016 Posted July 20, 2016 Anyone have any experience with Schwalbe Rock Razor as a rear tyre for trail use?
BenReaper Posted July 20, 2016 Posted July 20, 2016 thx for the heads up. I opted for the Saguaro due to the special (R490 v R750 = no brainer)Great choice fanie, I run a Saguaro at the back and Barzo up front and love the combo. Sent from my S40 using Tapatalk
