Someone is going to kill me for this...

I hike a bike a lot uphills and to be quite honest - dis lekker! After all, that's why I love trail riding - to enjoy the scenery, not getting back to the car as soon as possible! There's nothing like hiking jou gat af to the top, take in the scenery up there while having a smoke BEER and really just sit there for a while....

That's the spirit! Maybe even a flask of coffee too

Okey great! shot for the input guys! 26er it is! Unless someone offers a 650b trance for a steal.. In that case, let me just make this official.. SHOTGUN.

Okey cool, now that I have dibs, let's assume I'm going 26er in the meanwhile, how do people feel about coil shocks? Seems like a lot of downhill okes use them, but havn't seen them feature much for trail/ enduro riding. I'm considering a 2014 reign x1, where the oke replaced the monarch with a van R coil shock.

I'm definitely not on the level of riding crazy ass terrain and huge drop offs yet, but I want to get there eventually..

Coils are great. Put it this way - the air shocks are constantly trying to get as sensitive and plush as coil shocks. They're just better for that aspect. Just need to ensure you have the right spring for your weight, and that's where the air shocks take the cake - you set your spring rating with the amount of air in the chamber.

On the reign though a van is a good bet. Won't win any competitions on the way to the top, but it'll work beautifully on the way down. Thinking of getting a coil shock myself.

PM Hairy.

He has a 26" Stumpy for sale.

If it's in your budget you would be daft not to take Hairy's Stumpy.  The man is OCD about his bikes.  And never rides

Any Pics, would like to see it.

if you are cash strapped a 26er is hundreds - remember that if you are paying 15k for a 2nd hand carbon 26er now - there is a good chance that in 3 years time you could still offload it for 9k ... even though its "old".

Generally - bikes low ball at about 6 to 8k - so if you get a good deal now you may not loose in the long term financially.

If you get a newer 650b they will still devalue at the same percentage - so ultimately you loosing more buying a fancier more expensive bike - if you just look at the financials that is.

Indeed I enjoy this too and often find myself riding with people who are in a rush. Somtimes I am just out there to get up and down and most times I cant be bothered with the climbs. I take my time, push, look around and enjoy.

O and if its really cold, I have a very small flask of coffee with

If it's the black and red Reign belonging to a certain long-bearded man, you won't be sorry.

I've been on a Reign since 2005 and my problem is choosing a suitable replacement other than a Reign.

Maybe the Stumpy is also a nice bike...
