Which vitamins and minerals?

VERY important to have enough - too much is a big problem...

Indirectly - if you have no iron, then your blood has low haemoglobin levels (this carries oxygen), then you have low oxygen carrying capacity, and your perfomance is degraded.

If you want to experiment with this - just donate blood 2 days before a race....

Thanks. My haemoglobin levels were measured in the low 11's last week and have been told to take Ferrimed for the next 8 weeks. Being vegan doesn't help the situation, so lets see how it goes. Hope I get a small boost in my riding with the supplements.

It won't be an instant cure, so give it quite a few weeks. it will help

You should feel a bit better too - perhaps consider continueing on after the 8 weeks - on a slightly reduced dose.

Alsways check that whatever iron supplement you are taking has folate as a part of it, or add folate separately - the absorbtion rate is significantly higher.

I've identified your problem...

yes that's the problem maybe, or just a change in diet. I had bloods done in Jan this year and it wasn't an issue, well I suppose or maybe the GP just didn't pick it up.

Watch "The truth about Vitamins" on DSTV (..I know I know..., but Im a research freak,..and this program shed ALOT on this topic)

In conjunction with your mommy telling you to "EET AL JOU GROENTE MY KIND!!",...These are found as the only to be suplemented:

Omega 3; Vitamin D3; Magnesium

So are you saying these three plus the zinc are the only ones beneficial?

I take a multivitamin, vitamin D to absorb the other vitamins and vitamin c for immune defence because my brain (perhaps the world) tells me it does something that is good for me.

I think 11 is just regarded as low normal (it is always printed on the test results form) - but too low for an endurance athlete - ask him for your previous test results and check.

14 or better is where you want to be.

Just don't expect to see an immediate difference.  You improve slowly and don't really notice the difference.  Normally takes +- 3 weeks for me to feel much better.

Same with when my iron levels are getting low.  I don't really notice the drop until I start getting bad dizzy spells and feel very week.

I eat all the Iron rich roods, but my body just doesn't absorb iron well.

P.S  Vitamin C helps iron absorption so a glass of orange juice with your tablets is a good idea.

I take calcium as well, helps stops my cramps (which I mostly get swimming).

To stay healthy supplements: Zinc, *Iron, Folic Acid and Omega 3-acids. Pick the cheapest supplement that contains between 30-40 % NRV.

*Don't take Iron while ill, as it actually increases infection counts as it  serves as food for bacteria.

Recovery supplements: Magnesium pills.

Sensible diets and lifestyles (which all hubbers have) would contain all the rest of the required minerals and vitamins. Anything more is expensive urine.

Without getting bogged down on this issue, not all supplements are equal. IMO when dealing with your health, check the source of the supplements and ideally look for esterised supplements.

Well, here's my 2c's worth.  I was diagnosed with chronic fatigue / exhaustion a few years' back.

The doc (combo heart surgeon/physician and endocrinologist) suggested i take the following:

1. Multi-stain probiotics (max strength);

2. Zinc-selenium combo (eg "Zinplex");

3. Esther C;

4. Dr Vogel Base Powder;

5. Omega 3's ("Best 4" brand); and

6. Solal Burnout (for obv reasons).

The above got me healthy again.

According to "science",..yes :) Nasa,(ref. Truth about vitamins), only tell their Astronauts to take Vitamin D3, when sent into Space, saying other supps are useless, given the balanced diet they are given.
