Today I broke my rear derailleur while riding on the Spruit. I'd like to thank all those that stopped to try help me and those that offerered to help while I walked back from the Virgin Active to the Trailhead.

The derailleur either needs to be fully replaced or the part that broke replaced (possibly with a second hand part). I think the part that broke is called the derailleur cage. It is an XT 10 speed.

Can anyone please advise where the best place to get the job done in JHB is at a reasonable cost. As the weekend & public holiday is coming up I'd like to sort this out ASAP.

I can't seem to find the price for a rear XT derailleur on the service providers websites that I've looked at so far.

Thanks!

Post a picture, it will help people who can assist you. You can also buy replacement parts for the cage online, though you may have to wait a bit.

An idea would be to be a 10 speed Deore derailleur as cheap as possible in the short term. Then fix your XT with an online part at a later stage, then you have a spare.

I had this a couple of times, LBS got me a new cage. Otherwise just buy a Deore unit for a while.

Here is a pic. Not the greatest but a pic at least.

The cage broke but I'm not sure if there is any other damage as I didn't notice with my untrained eye. I should have checked the chain but I didn't.

I have called a few shops & stock seems to be a problem. One shop asked whether it is a long, medium or short cage. I'm not even 100% sure but I'm guessing long.

I'm trying to get sorted out asap to ride again on the weekend & public holiday.

There are quite a few different models of 10spd XT rear derailler. All will have a partnumber starting RD-78x-yyy where x= 1 for Shadow (non clutch) or x=6 for Shadow + (clutch) and yyy = GS for med. cage or SGS for long cage.

Med cage can be used with 1x and some 2x drivetrains (depending how much chain growth due to rear suspension travel and tooth difference between chainrings) but you'll need a long cage for a 3x drivetrain or a wide range 2x. If you are on a 1x drivetrain it is preferable to have a clutch RD as it is better for chain retention.

With that amount of damage both the hanger (specific to bike frame) and the pivoting link between hanger and RD body (shimano part, they call it a 'bracket axle unit') could also be bent.

Most LBS would stock a 10spd XT Shadow Plus RD so why not just go and buy one. If repairable fix the old one and keep as a spare.

First check your der. hanger the small metal piece your der. mounts to if that is not bent you can just replace/repair the der. ....also check that the cage moves normally with the clutch on and off then you should just replace the cage other wise the mechanism may be broken in which case you can just bin it.

IF you want to replace I have got one I'm trying to sell (Forgive me if this is frowned upon < Please don't stone me HUB community)

Good luck
