Uni Posted August 4, 2016 Posted August 4, 2016 what's the going rate for the shifter cables - i looked at some of the online places and I only found kits - just need the inside cable thing - little DIY project for the weekend just wanna know if i'm being ripped a new one or not.

Alouette3 Posted August 4, 2016 Posted August 4, 2016 Ask for one at the workshop of your LBS. They get them in bulk. Should find one for R20-25 though some places pull the ring out of it and charge R35-45!

JJDT Posted August 4, 2016 Posted August 4, 2016 but I only learned how to do the cable - how hard is it to do the housing too? When the cables are out remove the old housings, measure the length on the new housing, cut new housing, add housing ends and re-fit. Then just fit new cable.

An essential tool though is a decent quality cable cutter. You want to have a nice and clean cut when you're installing the new outer and snipping the end of the inner. Just make sure to buy the correct length outer - use your current one as a guide.

I did mine with wire cutters which are not the easiest but you can get it to work (if you really have to!). +1 on propper cutters. Don't underestimate the cable housing! Improper cutters can sort of clamp the housing which causes some cable friction. You can pry the housing open again with some fine screwdrivers and a plier, but it's less than ideal.

RockCoach Posted August 4, 2016 Posted August 4, 2016 The good quality ones are fairly expensive (around R50 retail) but they last longer so it's worth it.
