Shifter cables - going price?

Proper cutters to do the housing helps!! I did mine with wire cutters which are not the easiest but you can get it to work (if you really have to!).

Not difficult at all.

An essential tool though is a decent quality cable cutter. You want to have a nice and clean cut when you're installing the new outer and snipping the end of the inner.

Just make sure to buy the correct length outer - use your current one as a guide.

+1 on propper cutters. Don't underestimate the cable housing!  Improper cutters can sort of clamp the housing  which causes some cable friction. You can pry the housing open again with some fine screwdrivers and a plier, but it's less than ideal.

I have a WW1 set of foldable wire cutters that were carried in the trenches to cut  barbwire.

Now all these require are a little TLC in the form of alight coating of oil to keep it nice and smooth.

This particular cutter gives me a crisp and clean cut on both the housing and cable every time. LOVE it!

They look like this pic taken off the world wide web

but I only learned how to do the cable    - how hard is it to do the housing too?

Even easier, Just get a 2 meter length from your LBS and the measure the old lengths and cut new ones the same length ad the end caps and you done. (you might need cable cutters)

 My prices must be cheap then...

I charge R22 for the cable and R30 per meter for housing.  All Shimano stainless cables with Shimano housing.

so where do we find you?

I also want know...I have been struggling with rear derailleur cable always getting dirty so i want to run full housing from shifter to RD.

That's how I run mine. Works like a charm.

Ive seen some really ugly cable ties being fit to a full cable as the frame can't cater for it hence why i have been delaying it...

I recently just bought a shifter cable for my dropper post at the very local LBS...cost me R10.

Suppose it's not top quality but then again, just needed a replacement that day and it works perfectly.

So uni your SO stopped by and got more than just cables

I KNOW - you should've seen when he told me he had to stop by the trailhead to pick up a bike - I thought he'd bought another bike.

Can I implement a ban or something - that pump though - I do love it - but when I heard the price - Eish.

But hey, he's not allowed to buy a cube!! At least not before me

Happy to report cables (and housing) successfully replaced -(after a couple of attempts and a joint effort) though problems seemed to have been from bits being bent from my Thaba fall rather than cable, but bike feeling lekker again.

Sounds like you had a bent derailleur hanger. One usually discovers that only after replacing the cable and outer.

Luckily the cable and outer is inexpensive and its not a bad thing if replaced unnecessarily.

I can explain the symptoms

At the back it's jumping the middle cog, still can't get it right...so if out riding and I hear it stuggling for now I just shift again, have fiddled with the tension, it's just that one - so my thoughts now, can't be deraileur or everything would be out? Or not?

Then in front I could shift up to big ring fine, but shifting down to 2nd it wouldn't, the numbers on shifter indicate 2 - chain still sitting on big blade - thought it was cables, again that didn't help. OH fiddled with deraileur that helped.

A bent hanger is easy to diagnose. Just stand behind the bike and check that it is parallel to the cassette. You can also remove it and check it against a flat surface and give it a good look. When mine bent I could see fine hairline cracks in the paint at the point of the bend.
