A vertical shock is better...

Thats just it. Why remain fully committed/ hard headed. Sometimes its just better to admit a fault, not knowing etc

Because they just have to be right!

Or at least that's been my experience with people who don't want to listen to reason or accept another viewpoint could be better than theirs. And it often goes hand in hand with an unwillingness to consider and evaluate any other viewpoint or opinion.

I think "I act like a pro racer" should change your name to "I think I act like a know it all douche bag",you clearly have it out for certain people who are proving you don't know what you are talking about but you are like a Jack Russell and just carries on making noise. Over and out.

I do not see the woo. Less pivots is better, a solid rear triangle is better, and the shock at the seatpost is better.

Less pivots ARE better. See what you did there..... While we are at it, ......... nah too much effort to weight in on this one with closed minds and all.

Less pivots ARE better.

Nope. Unless it was just a correction of his grammar. In which case, you're right :P

Less pivots in a system does not make it a better system. It just makes it different.

I had a trance (vertical), then got an enduro (not vertical). The enduro is heavier than the trance with the same build kit. So sorry guys, empirical evidence, vertical is better.

Edit : forgot the /s

This thread reminds me of a story

My girlfriend (who let me tell you is only my 2nd girlfriend of all time) said I am "invited to dinner" with her and her parents. I was very aghast, nervous, and bashful to be invited to such a situation. But I knew it must be done.

I met them nicely, I should tell you, and it started off in a good way. The idea slapped my mind that I should do a comic bit, to make a good impression and become known to them as a person who is amusing.

When I saw that baked potatoes were served I got the idea that it would be very good if I pretended I did not know what potatoes was. That would be funny.

Well let me tell you: backfired on my face. I'll tell you how.

So first when the potato became on my plate, I acted very interesting. I showed an expression on my face so as to seem that I was confused, astounded but in a restrained way, curious, and interested. They did notice, and seemed confused, but did not remark. So I asked "This looks very interesting. What is this?"

They stared at me and the mother said "It's a baked potato." And I was saying "Oh, interesting, a baked....what is it again?"

And she was like "A potato."

And I was like "A 'potato', oh interesting. Never heard of a potato, looks pretty good."

And then they didn't see I was clowning, but thought I really did not know what is a potato. So I knew I would be very shamed, humiliated, depressed, and disgusted if I admitted to making a bad joke, so what I did was to act as if it was not a joke but I committed to the act of pretending I didn't know what a potato is.

They asked me, VERY incredulous, did I really not know what a potato is? That I never heard of a potato. I went with it and told them, yes, I did not ever even hear of a potato. Not only had I never eaten a potato I had never heard the word potato.

This went on for a bit and my girlfriend was acting very confused and embarrassed by my "****** up antics", and then the more insistent I was about not knowing what a potato is was when them parents starting thinking I DID know what a potato was.

Well let me tell you I had to commit 100% at this point. When I would not admit to knowing what a potato was, the father especially began to get annoyed. At one point he said something like "Enough is enough. You're ******* with us. Admit it." And I said "Sir, before today I never heard of a potato. I still don't know what a potato is, other than some kind of food. I don't know what to tell you."

Well let me tell you he got very annoyed. I decided to take a bite of the potato, and when I did I made a high pitched noise and said "Taste's very strange!"

That is when the father started yelling at me, and the mother kept saying "What are you doing?" and my girlfriend went to some other room.

Finally the father said I should "Get the **** out of his house" and I said it was irrational to treat me like this just because I never heard of a potato before. Well let me tell you he didn't take that kindly.

Now in text messages I have been telling my girlfriend I really don't know what a potato is. The only way I can ever get out of this is for them to buy that I don't know what a potato is.

I wish I never started it but I can't go back. I think she will break up with me anyway.

Your potato story was the first thing I read on this beautiful Friday and it was well worth it. Thank you for starting my day off like that.

Also, while I'm here and it is Friday I might as well chip in to this kinda weird thread, surely if less pivots are better hardtails are clearly the best

Yeah? And? Shock orientation is not an indication of a bike's performance.

I used to ride a Giant Anthem, I felt the vertical shock was a bit slow. So I went back to a hard tail. Then I saw Shurter riding a similar design, not exaxtly the same as Giant, there are some differences. I am 100 % sure that Shurter would not ride something slow.

Personally though, I would not buy a vertical shock again.

If your correcting grammar then fewer pivots is the correct usage. Ahem...

Fewer pivots are better, in the same way that less weight is better. I say this because it's TRUE, however it's not even nearly the only factor in the equation.

A 1kg bike is not necessarily better than a normal 7kg one. Don't believe me, go ride one and send your science test report from the ICU.

For something to be "better in totality" all the equations and especially the results needs to be considered and assessed in the area where that design was intended for.

Blanket statements...... eish!

Weight, yes to a point. Pivots. Nope. Otherwise we would all be riding Orange bikes

Blanket statements... Agreed.

Okay let me clarify the above. If you're developing a suspension design (take Knolly's suspension design as an example) and you're trying to decide between 2 designs that have the same characteristics (stiffness, travel, leverage ratio, anti rise, pedalling performance, instant centre etc etc) but THE ONLY THING that separates them is one has 1 more linkage than the other, then yes agreed the one with fewer linkages would be the better option if only for the extra simplicity and lower cost of servicing.

If the one with 1 more linkage is measurably different or is closer to your desired end result than the one with fewer linkages, then the one with more linkages is better for your desired purpose or outcome. Knolly clearly felt that the design they have (the four by 4) had a benefit over a normal 4 bar suspension design, giving it the characteristics that they wanted, and they went with it even though it has an extra linkage in place.

Further than that, you cannot say that fewer linkages or pivots makes a better bike. It's just not true.

No we won't, because of all the other contributing factors, other suspension designs are better!

I said less pivots are better, not less pivot points make a better suspension design.
