I saw a guy in Claremont with 1m of conduit attached to his seat post with some metal/reflector on the end of it, making sure all cars give him 1m passing space.

Miss landcruiser had to patiently wait behind him until it was safe to do so. Kudo's to that guy.

Not sure if it was the same guy, but I have seen someone some time back with a similar setup. Problem is though you gonna get that idiot or taxi that will probably scrape that boom or knock it

Looks like it will bend a bit, but if someone does scrape by, a fair amount of paint will be removed from the car in the process.

There is a guy who commutes daily through Ottery on a MTB with a black stick/sjambok looking object attached to his bike to, he rides confidently on the edge of the tar/gutter and im pretty sure all cars when passing him make sure they pass the object sticking out from his bike with some space.. He is also a very patient guy because at the traffic lights if the car infront of him is too close to the gutter, he waits instead of trying to get infront of it and possibly scratching the car...

Whoever you are Sir, Kudus to you...

I have mentioned doing something like this before. Possibly a hinged/ spring loaded type arrangement with reflective tape/ flashing lights on it.

Perhaps there is a business opportunity here for an enterprising hubber?

My father uses something like that in Joburg.  It bends quite a lot.

The general public are not educated at all about the fact that a cyclist has the same use of the road as a vehicle . Most drivers think they are trespassing when using a public road

How do we fix this?

Everyone with a legally obtained licence should know this, yet we still get treated like second class road users in some cases.

Just the other day, a driver coming up from behind, wanting to turn left, swore and shouted at me for going straight on. Apparently because I caused him to wait for me to pass the side road.

Yesterday, nice wide road with 1m yellow line on either side, me closer to the kerb than the yellow line, this van insists on passing me with his left wheels left of the yellow. WTF?

It happens most days to me. I just shudder to think when - not if - I will get knocked off and injured, if not killed.

That is my biggest gripe, the left turner from behind, either accelerate, pass and cut in front or just sit on horn behind you.

In reply to question, I have no idea how to deal with it. Some people just dont see cyclists, others just dont care.

if it has a large paint scratching nail stuck on the end I would buy one ^_^

I was thinking more along the lines of tungsten carbide tip hidden in a paintbrush dipped in paint stripper.

I had this a few weeks back.

Genius with no indicator. We both stopped at a red light.

Light changes, I go straight, he turns left and takes me out.

Cosmetic damage to me and the bike, but I think they will definitely look for cyclists in future after my meltdown in the intersection. ;)

It's law in the Western Cape for motorists to leave a 1.5m gap when passing a cyclist <http://www.bicycling.co.za/news-people/news-news-people/new-traffic-laws-affect-cyclists/> most people don't realize that unfortunately.

The law also states that cyclists ride in single file, don't go through red lights and stop at stop signs but that's another issue.

The "stay alive at 1.5" promotions don't really highlight the legal aspect.

Interesting posts.

Re the 1.5m rule: does it apply to a stop sign or traffic light?

I wonder because if there are 3 cars waiting, and the cyclist passes on the left and goes to the front, the gap wont be 1.5m. When the light turns green, all start moving together, and on a single lane road, the cars will be closer than 1.5 and may not have space to give 1.5m. Either the cyclest has to wait behind the cars at the stop (not overtake left) or the cars must then wait for the cyclist to roll and stay behind till they can pass outside of 1.5m. Which one?
