New Enduro Front Tire

I'm really needing a new front tire for my 26 inch Enduro bike, currently running a Maxxis Minion.  Anyone able to recommend something available in Somerset West / Cape Town?  Preferably not too expensive.

Try EVO bikes. They have a solid selection of 26er tyres available. Just got a 2.4 continental mountain king pure grip for R495.00. Taking it for it's first trip into the real world today

I know my Lbs has some Onza Ibex 26" in stock, but we are probably to far out of your way.

Come to think of it, if you know PhillipV he can organize a to pick up a tyre for you from my Lbs, in Worcester if you ask him nicely. That is if you don't come right anywhere else.

OK...so I was running a Spez Butcher until yesterday..

then I got the Magic Mary Super Gravity....Holy balls! No comparison, the Mary is better hands down... Was very impressed. Rode it on a section of trail I am super familiar with so hoping the difference I felt wasn't a biased opinion.

And cheap here:

R135 for 2 day shipping so around R920 for the tyre. Or cheaper if you don't mind waiting a bit.

Also in the market for a new front tyre. My Butcher (29") is showing signs of wear. Interested in MM Evo Super Gravity too but I see that there is approx 300g weight difference that one would need to adapt to (+/- 800g vs 1100g).

Thermo how has the transition been to the heavier tyre? I like the fact that the tyre was tested on a section of trail that you're super familiar with - I assume that any difference in feel/performance would be all the more obvious this way. Hopefully you've been able to do a little more 'testing' since then? The MM Evo Super Gravity is also possibly overkill for my needs/skill

Also considering ONZA IBEX 29 X 2.4 / RC2 65A/55A / FRC 60TPI KEVLAR at Evo Bikes @ R 850.00 and 960g.

Any views on durability also welcome.

Dude...honestly not really noticed the difference in the mass of the tyre...Were you running the Grid or Control casing on the Butcher?

I ran the Control up front for about 2500km, but the Grid would be heavier, so the mass diff between it and the MM SG would be less than the 800g.

And yes, testing on a super familiar surface made it VERY obvious how different and how much nicer the MM was compared to my butcher.

Sine that day I have ridden the MM on many diff surfaces, including barren rock, loose rock, gravel, hardpack...basically everything except mud and it's been outstanding in all.

Each time I start to feel like the front will wash out it just grips more. It really is a great tyre and have been able to run it as low as 19PSI, but it seems like it prefers around 21PSI.

It is a soft compound and after around 300 km is showing a bit of wear, but nothing excessive IMHO.

For W2W though I will be putting on something lighter...probably a Butcher again as it was a great tyre in its own right.

Chat to Droo from Stoke as well as they have loads of new Maxis tyres in stock at great prices as well.

Hope that helps.

I just got the MM (not the super gravity as I didn't think I needed it for my riding). Its awesome, grip for days on that thing and paired with the Rock Razor at the back, perfect.

Was also a little skeptical when I got the MM as being too much tire and hence the RR at the back. It just looks so bad ass and super grippy. Only had two rides though.

Here is a pic on the bike:

I recently rode a Michelin combo of the Wild Grip'R and Race'R, in the heaviest carcass available, with each tyre weighing in at well over 1.1kg and I can honestly say that you don't really feel a major difference between that and a slightly lighter tyre.

I'll always take a weight penalty, but have the reassurance of a tyre that isn't going to leave me trailside in tears.

I was also in the market for a new front tyre, but considering weight and price I'm just going to stick with the Butcher with control casing that's on the bike.  Grid in front is overkill, and it feels stupid chucking a kg+ tyre on my carbon hoops).  Done about 600km on the Butcher and really can't find anything to complain about.  It has at times had a bit of a "slip before you grip" feel but I think that's more to do with my propensity to over-inflate my tyres.

Must say, I reckon we've reached full Stockholm Syndrome when R920 for a bicycle tyre is punted as cheap.

Agreed...but considering the MM was not quite R920...

And R100 less for the non-SG version...It was worth a try :)
