Crater Cruise 2016 canceled. Dear cyclist and loyal supporter of the Crater Cruise. Due to an unforseen land access refusal, the 2016 event has been canceled. Access to the town and venue from the river side has been cut off due to the refusal. Rider entry fees will be reimbursed in full. We sincerely apologise for the inconvenience.

Sho! Short notice!

Plenty of disappointed riders, many make this a family day. Surely the permissions should have been sorted out a while ago and what is the reason for the land owners refusal.

This is unfortunately the reality we face

take this as an example, 5 years ago there was a race series called Bryton Big 5 challenge a series of 5 races near the hekpoort area. 2 weeks after the first race riders were informed that the series ws cancelled due to the reaction of animals in the nature we went through . They were freaking out and hurting themselves and others.

So the series was cancelled.  I know these were extenuating circumstances. But the land-owners could have a very valid reason for the refusal. That we may simply not understand.

Best to respect it and move on.

Bummer. Have dealt with loads of land access issues, and it's a tough game to play because at the end of the day or is the land owners right unless there's a contract in place.

But in saying that, this is a big long standing event so hard to see how this happened so late in the day. Don't know the area bit is there really no other option?

Not the first time they had trouble with this. Years back when I did the race one farmer changed his mind mid race and locked a gate with a chain.

Very dramatic. It's a pity really. Organizers have always had their hearts in the right place.

Can be a money issue

Maybe the land owners did some maths on entry fees and number of riders vs compensation received from organisers...

Money... the root of all evil.
