3. Make sure you take a few deep breaths before you pass them, so that when you say "good morning" as you pass them at speed, that you dont sound tired.

Whilst sitting up cleaning your sunglasses and eating something...

And the "EEK!" THUMP nghhhhhhh as you go over the bars on a 5cm drop...

:P

I would let the esteemed gentleman know that as of last Wed morning, I have 'gotten air' and 'cleared a table-top' (admittedly more a side-table top) and am now in the Top 30 of a piece of technicalish single-track. In other news, Satan's new igloo has been completed.

The day that a dude on knobblies and Camelbak passes me on the road, I would quietly book a First Class plane ticket to Cape Town, enjoy the trip down, get a limo from the airport to Table Mountain, take the cable car to the top, have a nice lunch up there and then proceed to jump off the damn mountain.

To be fair, the Muishond has already ridden down. So your impact would be lessened in the local papers.

What happened to calling mtb events fun rides? Back in 1994 when I was 9 yo and did my first Die Burger Sanlam 50km on my red bmx, all cycling events were called fun rides. Calling it a race seems silly.

Wanna know whats worse? Cyclists don't even greet other cyclists anymore. On my saturday ride I encountered 37 other riders, yep I was counting, only 7 of those greeted. Sad, thought we were all doing this together or at least share the passion. Thats it I'm done sorry for hijacking the thread...partly.

My focus when out on the road is:

1. Cars traveling in the same direction as me.

Are they ahead of me, coming from behind, stationary on the side of the road? Did they see me?

2. Pedestrians walking in the shoulder.

Did they see me? Are they a potential (bikejacking) threat?

3. Cyclists ahead / behind me traveling in the same direction as me. Are they passing, am I passing? Is it safe to do so?

4. My own cycling group. All onboard? Are we riding in a way that is safe for all of us?

5. Oncoming traffic

Are they passing other vehicles and moving into oncoming traffic?

6. The road for the next 50 or so meters / the wheel in front of me. Any obstacles? Hand signs warning me of any danger?

Greeting other cyclists will only happen once I am sure that I have the above under control. And then its a nod or a raised hand, not bellowing a HALLO! to the rider on the other side of a dual carriageway.

Haha... Having fallen twice in the same elementary rock garden in 5 mins, I will always be more Sore Buttock than Bad Ass.

In which case it is.

Is that a rogue rider?

Is he going in the correct direction on the trail?

Am I going in the correct direction?

Can I greet him, he is riding a spaz

What size wheels are those?.

Why is he wearing Lycra

Is someone trying to overtake?

Can I overtake?

Is my rebound correctly set?

Do I have a puncture or is my back shock too soft

Should I stop and lube my chain?

What's that squeaking sound?

Dropper posts, are things really hotting up?

Is that mud or a turd?

If it's mud will it wreck my drive train?

Is that a bike jacker?

Do people think I'm a dirt roadie?

Will I win the Epic lottery?

All this multitasking is ruining my cognitive abilities... Some people can only think 'Greet...Repeat'
