Wider bars

You guys mention these dimensions for trail...

What about a Dirt Roadie like me who does just marathon type stuff?

What would the estimated bar width and stem be that I should look for? Taking into account that I worried about control than "flickability"

Rode my epic with a 60mm stem/720mm bars. Was fine. Much better feeling than the stock 90/100mm stem that was on it.

Made no difference in climbing and descents felt much better. Less feeling of going over the bars.

Still applies though you'd probably be better served by a slightly longer (60-70mm) stem due to the higher emphasis on climbing. Still able to climb properly with a 40/50mm stem but requires a bit of emphasis on the bars unless your chainstays are longish or your seat angle is pretty aggressive.

It's all about enabling you to move more efficiently and get rid of that OTB feeling in the steep and techy bits

For dirt roadies it's all about the breathing - the wider the more efficient.

So the wider the better it's just how wide can you go.

(Have you noticed the hipsters go 300mm wide on their fixies - no control and they smoke)

How do you guys ride wide bars safely? I run the "standard" XCM set up 680x100 and have bashed more plugs out than I care to remember!!!

One learns to control their bike better

Only ever bashed bar plugs once at the Garden Route Trail park where it was TIGHT and was riding my old 800mm ones.

But 800 was too wide for me...you still need to be able to bend your elbows or turning is negatively affected....

Best advice...buy the widest you can find, try it. No like - cut and try SLIGHTLY narrower

Currently 700mm with what seems to be 95mm stem... Hmm looks like I need to make a plan.

I've tried various combos and have settled on 680x100. I don't like wider or shorter...

I rode Garden Route Trail Park last month for the first time and loved it. What an awesome park! That forest section behind the loop of doom is the stuff dreams are made of!

You're on the right track! As for bars, if you're on a budget you simply can't go wrong with Rapide. They have a fantastic 780mm bar for R 280. I've been using them for a while now and they're the real thing. Stiff, strong and cheap.

Obviously you can cut it down if you want to.

Thanks for putting me on to these guys, Myles. Quick service/delivery, good prices and a pretty painless online ordering process.
