What the hell?!  That's an average of five and a half hours of riding a day as of yesterday when you posted the pic!!!  That's just madness!

I always knew that I was only going to be in this for the lucky draw prize, but damn!  I'm being beaten into the corner with this!

Ham is an old hand at this. He rides from Somerset West to town and back, and then does a ride with mates afterwards. And rode from Somerset West to Eselfontein to go see a mate.

Describing him as committed or tenacious would be like saying the beach is sandy.

Tough one on the road mileage for a MTB event.

Guess its the easiest denominator to compare across the board.

Like in most things with rules you have to play within them

HAM must be helluva fit. Anyone have an idea of his route?

Racking up miles on the road for a mtb race is a bit wrong in my opinion.

You can even do the miles on a stationary bicycle. On it's easiest setting, it's quite easy to whiz along on the Wattbike at 40km/h.

75kms from Somerset West into Cape Town in the morning, and the same on the way home. Go and stalk him on Strava ;)

Well I did come 3rd overall in the W2W Ride 2015, so I'm not totally useless on a MTB.

Sadly I don't have enough to win the challenge this year, Fanie is putting in some truly scary rides and most of them are hidden for the past week. His 9th sept totalled 228km (last unhidden rides).

As I said before, I have my own goal and I'll stick to the plan.

The Ham Plan!

Cool I could use some company this weekend.

Hey Bodger - a little bit much unrelated but why do you have Alpacas in your profile pic? My sister runs an Alpaca farm in Belgium hence me asking... or did you recently travel to South America... www.alpacaflanders.be

Why does a competition to win a MTB entry revolve about distance? This just inspires road rides. Why not include a simple formula that incorporates elevation gain or something?

Go riding in Jonkershoek, do Saaltjie up and all the way down the canaries and corkscrew, go up to the start of Red Bennet and come down and end with a Firehut. It's less than 30 km that doesn't mean anything in this competion but I'm sure you will have much better prep for W2W. Also, if W2W is your type of thing you will probably have more fun too.

Edit: What Admin said.

I just think its cool that someone has come up with a competition where you don't have to like and share their facebook page or hashtag & tag them in a selfie.

I honestly can't remember. I was fascinated by them a while back, I was amazed at their long necks, fluffy coats and weird behaviour. I even went to visit them at the alpaca loom on Suid-Agter-Paarl Road.

It comes down to reliability and comparability. Ideally we'd use metrics like elevation gain and calories, however when it comes to measuring these accurately not all devices are made equal... at least not in Strava's eyes.

The elevation data from any device without a barometric altimeter is ignored by Strava and instead they use elevation models to guesstimate the elevation of a ride. And this applies to a big chunk of dedicated GPS devices and all smartphones.

This typically results in massively inflated elevation figures (to the tune of 2x what it should be) which means it's not a reliable metric we can use for scoring.

Agree, as flawed as this comp is - far more interesting than "like & share our post"

It's called Love The Bike, why go and ruin it by cheating! Can someone please remove this Fanie doosh from the competition.

Who does a 7h road ride and rides at a constant 24kph up and down and taking uphill KOM all along the way!

I call foul play!
