Garmin interval training mode

I need to upgrade my Garmin device.

I see that the 520, 810 & 1000 devices have an "Interval Training" feature.

Do this work effectively for interval training?

Does it give an sound when the interval starts and when it stop?

Jip it does and gives you a quick summary of what is happening in the next set.....

(Edge 1000)

Is the touch screen not tricky to operate on a MTB, over rough terrain?.

on the 520, you can configure intervals in your garmin profile and sync with the device. works pretty well actually. not sure about the intervals being configured on the device itself, but setting it up on a desktop environment is easy peasy. I assume the models up from the 520 will work the same way. not sure about below though

Got a Garmin 520. The Garmin Connect app works well for setup of the interval workouts and subsequent downloading to the device. I reckon it is a good buy. Thxs Guys.

Is that not just a lap button?

Your legs do the rest

Normally on Garmin it's the lap button, but that's not the best way.

Polar (and now Garmin) allow you to pre-upload some intervals, so the watch can remind you when an interval starts and stops.  I don't know if I care about this.

Ergomo's interval mode on the head unit was much better than Garmin's lap mode.  I'd love it if Garmin (or any other head unit) re-implements this.  Basically:

  • have an indicator that an interval is busy (vs. lap count that doesn't distinguish between interval/rest)
  • switch the display to interval mode automatically when starting an interval (interval ave. power/cadence, interval time)
  • switch back to rest mode when the interval ends (total time/distance)
  • briefly display max when switching to rest (in this interval you achieved X ave power)

This makes it so easy and useful to see if your intervals are improving or fading.  It focuses your interval by displaying only the things that matter during an interval (vs. silly things like temperature)  It gives context to the numbers that Garmin displays.

That is exactly how Garmin's interval mode works if you pre program your workout.

The manual isn't a great help there.  I'll have to borrow a 520 to try it.

The manual does tell me it falls far short:

- no ad-hoc intervals

- no maximums (speed, cadence, power,...) for last lap.

No indication if the display will auto-switch between screens when intervals start or stop, or how to specify which fields you want to see during an interval.

When you do it on the device it is pretty self evident - it's all configurable - but have a look on youtube and you will find some clips there that show you how to do it.
