Is it a Lithium Polymer (LiPo) pack?

If so they should never be left unattended whilst charging.

Have a look around the web for LiPo fire hazards.

f@kit,

How do we check for this or know if a battery is going to pop!

Will have to watch the batteries during charging.  Long process.

You could get a battery bag. Or charge it in any fireproof container: ammo box etc.

Great idea.  Have several ammo/mortar boxes so will have to be made into a definitive battery charging station.

Latest Samsung Note 7 has experienced a few battery detonations and is consequently banned from certain airlines....

There is a lot of juice in those Li-ion / Li-po bike light batteries. Quite a bit more than the average motorbike battery in fact. They are subjected to serious vibration and the cables also prone to fatigue from flexing during a ride. I had one where one of the wires simply broke.....it could just as easily have shorted against the other wire and started a fire.

Inspect often and be careful. Only use the dedicated charger that was supplied with it.

What brand?

Cannot be 100% sure. Bought it in June 2013, my bank statement has a payfast account no. Was from a Cape Town online supplier. No name on the product. Battery was always very warm during charging so I charged it at the office and kept an eye on it as I only use it Wednesdays. Not the brightest light in the range, actually a budget light but it was fine for my type of riding, always liked the light, battery bag is suspect.

That almost looks like it's burnt already. Was it every exposed to sweat etc., perhaps a short.

The batteries are making me very nervous the way so many now seem to be catching fire.

Not burned yet, but close. If a lithium battery burns properly it'll take the room it was in with it too.

OP - close call. The fireproof box is a good idea, especially when buying batteries of unknown origin.

Please remember to remove the ammo/mortars first!  Could be quote a show otherwise.

OK, so now I have something to do while I'm watching the paint dry ;)

On a serious note: This is a danger more people should be aware of.

Please name the supplier if possible. As one of the bigger suppliers of lights (Magicshine) in SA I would definitely want to know if this was a battery I supplied. I have supplied thousands of batteries over the years and I am not aware of a single potentially dangerous failure, but I would like to know if there was one!

I never charge my batteries unattended for this reason. I've had a charger burn before (cheap deal extreme import charher) and now usually charge them next to my desk in the office. And I only use extremelight chargers as they went for SABS approval on their chargers.
