I have two "queries" that maybe the forum can help with. (Get the ball rolling)

1. Has anyone entertained the idea of doing RASA on a so called road "gravel" bikes that can take 30-40 mm wide tyres. Such as Specialized Roubeux or Cannondale Slate. They must be nice and light and 1x or 2x gearing can be fitted that is identical to MTB. Disc Brakes.

I'm sure would be great for district roads. Not sure about the technical stuff? Thoughts?

2. I use Cateye Adventure speedo at present for logging distance.

Like, because has Distance 1 and 2 so can zero independantly, which is great as you then get splits zeroed (Dst 1) as per narrative and the other (Dist2) keeps the total for the day.

Problem is numbers are small and I'm getting long arm syndrome with my sight. Any Suggestions? What do you use.

Thanks

It's been done on Fat bikes , Tandems , SS and even Specialized so why not a "road bike" . But it will be a challenge getting over some rocks and stuff  :whistling:  .

I used the Topeak Panorama also short arm syndrome . But see if you can get a wireless version

Look at some video's of cyclo cross and carry push your bike. Many on real mountainbikes will be carrying pushing as well. Its not about clearing obstacles its about preserving energy to make it another day. There is much stuff that you would ride on a normal day that on day 10 you walk cos your tired, cos your ass hurt, or cos you just feel like a walk and enjoy the scenery.

Get shoes you are comfortable in for walking as you will walk a bit.

It can be done wouldn't recommend it though if you are just going to Rhodes as the first days are the roughest.

For anyone interested, I am selling a 14spd Rohloff internally geared hub - rear wheel.

Background:

After RASA 2012 I purpose built my ultimate (emphasis on simple and robust) RASA bike.

But I then got married and had a kid...

Long story short - priorities have changed, and I no longer use the wheel.

(I use the rest of the bike for less time & resource consuming races and rides  :))

Send me a PM if you are intrigued so I can give you as many of the details as you need...

Good luck to all 2017 participants, I'll see you back on that trail before too long!!

I have 2 pairs of Shimano XM9 Gor-Tex cycling boots Size 45 that have never been used that I would like to sell, I paid R2200 plus import duties for each pair and would just like to recoupe my money as I already have a pair.

These boots are much lighter and far more comfortable than the previous model and also seem far more durable.

Im happy to pack and post.

To answer the OP's question on the gravel bike, you might find you want a more upright position on the bike. The low body position on a gravel/cx bike might take it's toll.

But like anything, if you train on it, you will be used to it.

Rigid SS was my bike of choice and would probably be now.

On the shoes thing.... seriously. Get hiking shoes with cleats. This is not an mtb race with portages you can ride. Some days you will hike up a mountainside with no paths where sheep fear to roam.

I landed up buying a pair of Shoes off Glenn Harrison's feet in Rhodes after making a bad shoe choice. Best thing I ever did. Warm, comfy Shimano MT44's.

I wouldn't do it on a CX bike. It is pretty rough going in places and having bombproof tires is a must.

Anyway, I envy those who can afford this race, both in money and time away from work. One of the most amazing 2500km you will ever do.

That moment when the electric gate opens for you and you roll down the brick road to the finish is magical

So who's in?

I have admitted to Meryl beiing keen but doubtfull if leave will be granted at work in that period.

Now need to loose at least 5 kg, bike is going on a diet too.

So it seems the holiday ban only starts mid june so I should be able to get to Rhodes. No confirmation yet but maybe I should go get out into the cold and ride a bit. Any one else started training yet?
