as the story goes, Martin used to go fish in Alaska to pay the bills whilst being a fulltime paddler the rest of the year. Apparently it was the toughest stuff he ever did, good training indeed!

a google search on his academy sent me to this page.

going back to that light conversation

I had a closer look at martin's 'unicorn', firstly it appears to not be a Rush, but the fancier Scalpel. That's a lighter bike and probably carbon too. Got a bit fooled by it not being with a lefty, normally the entry level 'Dales come with a normal fork.

But, take a gander here, and while he doesn't have a map board count the lights he has at his disposal.

Mart managed to get hold of a Scalpel-Si 3 with a standard Fox fork so that he could run a dynamo hub. The frame is carbon and he's also running some Csixx carbon hoops.

We did Mordor in the dark backwards in May... Bear in mind 150 odd guys went through there a month ago. The route is a veritable main road compared to other years.

Drop down the Osseberg (which has been cleaned up hugely as well), cross the river, climb the saddle and drop into the start of the criss cross..... I'm pretty sure I even cleared most of those terrible jumping cactus plants with my shins 4 weeks ago!

Went through there in March with RTW. Funny those cactii ... you try miss them as best you can and then you look down or feel a pinch and its that same gasping feeling like when you discover a blood sucking leach on your leg or when you've stepped into dog poo. We tried all different kinds of strategies to get them off and none worked well. For a week or 2 afterwards my legs had little pinhole scabs and I was a lucky one, some of us needed amateur bush surgery to treat infection due to broken off pinnacles. Gotta love those little cactii ... left us with another story to tell :-).

has DINO skin, SHARK skin or HIPPO skin depending on which version you're gone for. seems tough enough for the Freedom Trail

I don't remember them from 2008. Now i won't ever forget them from Expedition.

They are designed by the devil - the farmer's wives were even swearing about them!

I made sure I had a pair of long nose pliers handy... It is the only way to get those guys out if you hit them at any sort of pace. Evil little buggers... I remembered them well from the Freedom trail and School 'Long Walk' through the Eastern Cape. I tried to explain them to my team mates who looked at me like I was mad... a jumping cactus limpet mine? pfffft..... The penny dropped pretty hard when they were begging for my pliers!

What's wrong with you guys that place is lovely. I did it in 2014 in snake season at 40 degrees and 2015 in rasa beinng tourguide to JT. Its just pure fun with the right mindset.

Never really looked at the map in 2015 and the one crossing I have a memory lapse and hesitate where to go.

JT takes ou his map and asks me where we are I just use my stupid look.

He then askshow many crossings have we done.

I say honestly no clue you are the co pilot your only job is to hang on and count them.

So JT says what shall we do?

I tell hiw to shut up cos I am trying to think like a Kudu as thats our way through.

He says a Kudu?

Yup thats what Marnitz told me before my 2014 recce when stuck think like a Kudu and follow Kudu spoor.

Then I tell him about the Kudu that jumped across the track 5m in front of me.

Think he was ready to sh*t himself but 5 min later the Kudu found the magic three and we where on our way again.

A bit further on we stumbled on a dead kudu that stank badly.

Such a pity i couldn't find the baboon skull that would have been a nice handlebar item.
