i thought had it all... now to rethink it again - replacing a SC 5010

A question to Myles, Hairy, Peach and some other guys that are good riders and had the privilege to ride/own a lot of different bikes...

in 2014 i spent most of the year researching to find the "perfect" MTB for my riding.  With a mix of marathon, enduro and the occasional downhill track in my mix of "needs to handle", I took 10 years worth of projected bicycle expenditure and bought a SantaCruz 5010 as the ultimate all-rounder in my book.  XT groupset, Pike fork, Reverb post, spank wheelset and the whole toot.  The bike was exactly what I wanted and loved it!

It got stolen last week and I doubt that the insurance will cover a full replacement for this bike at current pricing and exchange rate, so I might have to settle for something different.

I've been thinking along three options:

1)  Replace the bike with as close as possible (doubt this will fall within my budget;  I think the new pricing is around 1.6X as much as I paid two years ago)

2)  Replace with something like a Giant Trance Advanced (maybe not as wow, but still a very capable ride i've heard;  i've never ridden one though)

3)  Replace with something completely different like a AM hardtail (On-one, Cotic etc. with top end spec and perhaps a better wheelset etc.).

Option 3 means I can likely get a really high spec bike (possibly even a Ti frame), but not sure how fun or capable an AM hardtail would be compared to what I had?

Challenge is I would like to decide quite soon as I am stuck without a ride at the moment...  I also live in Musina, meaning that test-riding all of the said bikes is an endeavour that will take months and numerous trips to the big city.

I guess I can hone this down once I know the exact amount that the insurance will cover, but would maybe appreciate some comments from those who have ridden all or most of these bikes whether you think I'm on the right track with any of these options.

Sorry for the loss. Hold out and save for a 5010 again. Great bike. If you can tolerate the bigger wheels there are some nice Tallboy frames on the classifieds and these can run 120mm forks....makes a nice marathon bike. My TBLT will be up for sale soon.

Shaite dude, sorry for your loss! I know how you feel...

Firstly. Good rider!? Pfft. Havin a laugh

2nd. Haven't owned a lot of bikes but I sure do read a lot of reviews and owner threads to get info on bikes I may replace the reign with one day when I'm rich and famous

3rd. The 5010 (or solo) is by all accounts an AMAZING bike and the newer model even more so. Giant (not the brand) killer, it has been dubbed. Or the quiver killer. All reviews si far have been stellar, and the rider feedback is without a doubt excellent.

It certainly won't be replaceable with a lowly tallboy (no offence, jxv. It's just in a completely different class)

As for options as a direct replacement... Bikes that come to mind are the Stumpy / new trance / yeti sb5.5 / banshee spitfire and quite a few others. Proper list later, though it'll only be useful once you know what you're being paid out.

Do you want to say what you were insured for so we can give a bit more info?

I myself am in a presentation pretty much all day (Discovery launch) but the other okes here can also give you some good in

If you want to have a combo of marathon and enduro, please have a very close look at the Santa Cruz Hightower. Can do 90% of what a Tallboy can do and 95% of what a Bronson can dish up.

My tb2 with a super plush mrp 120" and a dropper can handle any blue or black stuff I care to scare the cr@p out of myself with. As well as most other bikes with slightly longer travel. And over distance it's beaut.

Would love a 5010 though as well...have lusted after one.

I've got a mate who's selling a 2015 5010 frame for 25k. It's a large. Perfect condition. Maybe if your insurance co allows that route than maybe do that.

If the Fork is included in that R25k then it is a very good deal. Add R10k for new wheels and tyres, another R8k for a new SLX M7000 groupset and another R10k for bar, stem, dropper, saddle and grips. On the road for R53k and practically brand new.

If a fork is not included you're in for R60k-R62k.

If budget is tight you can save with used bits off the hub classifieds and probably get it rolling with decent parts for around R40k to R45k. Buy a nicely specced 2nd hand 27.5 hardtail off the Hub and strip it for parts then sell the HT frame after.

The choices you guys have suggested are all fantastic ... but KA-CHING !!

Those SC frames are 55K a pop.

I looked at upgrading from my TBLT to a hightower, but gees .... I dont have enough Kidneys to sell ..

OP, what is your budget ?
