The choices you guys have suggested are all fantastic ... but KA-CHING !!

Those SC frames are 55K a pop.

I looked at upgrading from my TBLT to a hightower, but gees .... I dont have enough Kidneys to sell ..

OP, what is your budget ?

I found a used Hightower frame with 150mm Pike and FloatX shock in near showroom condition for R40k recently and jumped on it.

With suspension in firm mode it is responsive and pedals fast on the flats. I would happily ride it as a marathon bike. In open mode it's a riot.....

That's a great deal.

It's not. I think you need to ease up on that bong mate.

Yeah just checking.... you never know. At R25k frame only (assuming this includes the shock and headset) its still a good deal for a 2015 frame.

A question to Myles, Hairy, Peach and some other guys that are good riders and had the privilege to ride/own a lot of different bikes...

in 2014 i spent most of the year researching to find the "perfect" MTB for my riding.  With a mix of marathon, enduro and the occasional downhill track in my mix of "needs to handle", I took 10 years worth of projected bicycle expenditure and bought a SantaCruz 5010 as the ultimate all-rounder in my book.  XT groupset, Pike fork, Reverb post, spank wheelset and the whole toot.  The bike was exactly what I wanted and loved it!

It got stolen last week and I doubt that the insurance will cover a full replacement for this bike at current pricing and exchange rate, so I might have to settle for something different.

I've been thinking along three options:

1)  Replace the bike with as close as possible (doubt this will fall within my budget;  I think the new pricing is around 1.6X as much as I paid two years ago)

2)  Replace with something like a Giant Trance Advanced (maybe not as wow, but still a very capable ride i've heard;  i've never ridden one though)

3)  Replace with something completely different like a AM hardtail (On-one, Cotic etc. with top end spec and perhaps a better wheelset etc.).

Option 3 means I can likely get a really high spec bike (possibly even a Ti frame), but not sure how fun or capable an AM hardtail would be compared to what I had?

Challenge is I would like to decide quite soon as I am stuck without a ride at the moment...  I also live in Musina, meaning that test-riding all of the said bikes is an endeavour that will take months and numerous trips to the big city.

I guess I can hone this down once I know the exact amount that the insurance will cover, but would maybe appreciate some comments from those who have ridden all or most of these bikes whether you think I'm on the right track with any of these options.

If the idea of owning a Transition or Banshee appeals to you, drop me a line. There are a bunch of models on sale at the moment....lets see if we can get one that will fit your pocket!

The Transition Scout would be a pretty good option here, although not a carbon frame - 120mm rear and 140mm front travel, and a full build for around R 55k is possible.

Thanks guys

No confirmation yet, but the first indications are that I can expect a pay-out of around R50k.  So very far from enough to replace the 5010 with the spec I had, but still a more than a decent share of cash to buy something nice.

So this wasn't really supposed to be a Pyga VS SantaCruz VS Banshee VS YT VS Lapierre VS Rocky Mountain etc. debate, because the bottom line is that all of these bikes (with good specced components) are quite far outside of the price range of what my insurance will cover.

At least last time I looked, the new Trance Advanced was a good 25% cheaper than any of the bikes above and is likely reachable with the insurance pay-out that I expect to receive.  Perhaps a Trek Fuel EX (if you get it in 27.5?), Scott Genius or similar would be in a similar price class as a Trance, I just referred to the Trance as the most common one of the "high-volume" brands which I know best.

I am a bit hesitant to go back to an Alu frame.  Firstly because I am a heavy(ish) rider and I ride heavy... Have broken 3 Commencal frames before and since I owned the SC 5010, I am a believer of carbon...  I also don't want a slog of a bike because I spend a lot of time riding uneventful dirt roads for training up here in the North.  I saw Peach's thread yesterday about his Banshee build, and although it's a jaw-drop stunning bike, you're going to feel 14.8 kg's on 80k marathon race in Magoebas...

I've got a mate who's selling a 2015 5010 frame for 25k. It's a large. Perfect condition. Maybe if your insurance co allows that route than maybe do that.

is it listed here on LeHub, or do you have contact details that you can share?  Seems like something I can work with!!!

Sent you a PM. The owner is a hard rider but he treated that bike with kid gloves. It's in pretty much brand new condition.
