Hi I would like to know if this is possible? I would like to get that ratchet sound on my back wheel. Can this be done and if so what will it cost? Tx

Some hubs have that sound and some don't. Get a set of wheels with Hope hubs or

That sound is dependent on the design of the freewheel mechanism, so if your hub doesn't have it then its a new hub (R800 + depending on hub) then wheel build labour (R400+-) then possibly new spokes (R25-30+- per spoke).

Is it worth it just so you get a noise? simply put NO....

You can buy a new hub, ask the oukes at www.rapide.co.za (or maybe someone else can recommend someone in your area) to rebuild the wheel for you, and bob's your uncle.

If you have, say, a Shimano, and replace it with another model Shimano, you might get away without having to buy new spokes, because they more or less have the same flange sizes, but if you go different brand, new spokes (at more or less R20 each) will happen. Rebuild will happen, as all spokes need to be removed to replace the hub, and laceing a wheel is an art form I haven't mastered...

Replace the hub if you broke it, otherwise stay on your bike and silently pass the other riders...

I recently acquired new wheels with Hope mk4 hubs and looking for a way to make them quieter....... and no, not prepared to swap......

Hub buzz is over rated

Pump them full of grease to quieten them. Should work for one or two rides. If it's too loud, you are too old....

Thicker than normal grease works better to quiet them down - too thick and the freehub stops working with the drag.... it's a fine line between noise and chainsuck...

If you have the budget the Hope rear hub is around the R4k mark. Otherwise Novatec is a pretty good option for about R1400.

Add cost of labour and new spokes & nipples: R800 - R900

It is worth the upgrade not for the sound but if you have open bearing hubs (with cup and cone) like Shimano then the sealed bearing hubs like Hope and Novatec make a lot of sense. Maintenance and longevity is much better plus the hubs can be converted to just about any common axle configuration.
