Mojoman Posted October 2, 2016 Posted October 2, 2016 Not much to complain about. No problems with cyclists. Had one lady clearly pointing with her arm that she wanted to cross over from the right hand sight to left at a crossing, gave her the space, she waved thank you and I hooted "pleasure" Seemed that there was some race going on? Only had this group to "content" with, but it was no real problemIMG_2240.JPGIMG_2239.JPG Only real danger was what looked like a race marshal in a red Toyota conquest with orange light stopping in the road over a blind rise next to some cyclists standing next to the road. Could have been dangerous, had to brake pretty hard: had cars in front of me who also had to brake hard. That's the Maropeng road coming up for the R24 to Magalies, sketchy riding there at the best of times. Its never policed and most bikers (and locals in their cars during the week) give it stick down that road because of that...It was only a couple of weeks back a couple of pedestrians were knocked down and killed on the intersection those riders are coming up to...
Paul Ruinaard Posted October 2, 2016 Posted October 2, 2016 Cradle was actually amazingly accommodating today. Seems like recent events have had an impact on people. Lots of cops and traffic police patrolling and bleeping cyclists with their sirens when they thought the bunch was too big. I did have a chuckle at some of the noobs. The best was a guy so badly cross chained his whole drive train was screaming, riding like a bear in a circus (knees out) cause the saddle was too low. I always want to comment and try to help but its just seems they are all so impressed with their efforts and also when they are with someone its their boyfriends who have told them to do it like they are that I am not willing to risk it .....
Patchelicious Posted October 2, 2016 Author Posted October 2, 2016 To the Cradle riders credit, I only saw one large group riding a bit chopish. Will post the pic tomorrow. Blocking an entire lane and more, on the section from Stone Haven towards Kloofzicht where there is no shoulder, car behind them....... We saw a gent on the ground at the circle at Kloofzicht, he was being attended to by medics. Anybody know if his ok? Or what happened?
Patchelicious Posted October 3, 2016 Author Posted October 3, 2016 Here is a pic of what not to do. ( Dont know the group nor do I care, this is for info purposes only) 3 abreast when there is no shoulder. The car behind would either have to slow down completely or move into the oncoming lane putting the photographer in danger! http://i571.photobucket.com/albums/ss153/Patch-elicious/Pic%20of%20cyclsits_zpseoykt8fn.jpg

Ispeed_V Posted October 3, 2016 Posted October 3, 2016 Rode the cradle on Saturday morning (not the norm as usually ride Sunday) and am sad to the say that the conduct of some of the cycle clubs was horrific to say the least. There was one large bunch (not sure of what club as not many were wearing club colours) riding past the Cradle restaurant that were literally taking up the entire road, to such an extent that cars overtaking had to veer into the oncoming lane putting not only other cars in danger but also cyclist going in the opposite direction.

Cava Posted October 3, 2016 Posted October 3, 2016 And that makes it okay? There is no shoulder - ride single file... Simple! The are valid reasons for groups to ride 2 abreast, for instance to discourage same lane passing and being forced off the road as a result. It also makes it easier for cars that do pass with a wide berth as the length of the group is less.
Patchelicious Posted October 3, 2016 Author Posted October 3, 2016 To be fair, it looks like the group is riding 2 abreast with another cyclist passing them.You get 2abreast and you get t w o a b r e a s t.

However we should always be considerate, especially in the current climate us cyclists should be extra considerate.
Pulse Posted October 3, 2016 Posted October 3, 2016 Riding 2 abreast is illegal. So you want to act in an illegal manner to force other road users to pass you in another lane? What about the poor oke on the bike moving in the opposite direction? Sorry ro say, but cyclists act like knobs
V12man Posted October 3, 2016 Posted October 3, 2016 You get 2abreast and you get t w o a b r e a s t.And then you get cyclelabs version of 2 abreast.... 2 lanes and the cycle lane abreast.... there is a reason why I won't ride with them any more, and that's it... That said - I don't know why motorists can't take a deep breath sometimes and just chill for a good and safe opportunity to overtake - having ridden in Italy and France I am in awe of their respect for cyclists - actually Melbourne was also similar- nothing like SAs kill or be killed approach

By all means ride two abreast if the emergency lane is wide enough but then again....that will also be against the law because only emergency vehicles should be allowed to ride in the emergency lane....just can not win. Biggest issue in the country is no one is considerate anymore...everyone believes it is their right etc
