I'm asking for a friend, why are there so many power stage meters for sale in the classifieds if it is so popular or is it possibly because they are so popular?

A bad day cycling is better than a good day working.

I think it's because while they seem to be flexible to use, they're actually fairly specific with regards to crank length and bike type. Then of course there are people like me who have to have things matching, so a durable ace arm cannot find its way on to my ultegra crank.

Nothing wrong with them though. They're lovely units, super light weight and have been easier to use than my previous meters.

If there's a bargain, no need to be overly wary.

Why are there so many VW's, Toyotas for sale second hand.?

I haven't heard any major complaints about the Stages product.

I think the number available second hand is just indicative of the numbers currently being used.

Perhaps they just cheaper. I use one bought off the hub and I have been very happy. However I do not have another power meter to compare to. But I have looked at my power readings compared to when I hook my bike up to a contraption that shows my power and its the same.

I reckon that most people actually don't know what to do with the huge amount of info that PM's punch out (apart from saying 'I pushed this many watts'). Also training with a PM and having a program to work towards is a pretty strict and anti social thing. Can't really stay in your zones on a group ride with mates on a Sat' that easily without being paid out on massively. I use mine a lot but I can't say I actually use it to it's full capacity. Just don't have time to crunch numbers and get fully into the theory.

Maybe not many average riders are getting that much benefit out of having one. A mate of mine just sold his and put the money into membership at one of those altitude / Watt bike classes which means he can do 2 - 3 structured, coached and analysed classes a week and then can 'free ride' or race on the weekend. Some people they are useful for some, get them and for some they aren't I guess.

Whenever I do my watt bike power sessions I am broken compared to trying to do the same efforts up signal hill or Constania Nek.

28 power meters for sale, with a mix of crank, pedal, and hub based. I was expecting to see a lot more based on the OP.

I wonder what the ratio of 'I have upgraded/changed' vs 'for all that money I spent it didn't make me any faster' would be

Stats you would never see.  This will be like an admission of guilt in a car accident.  In both cases you would have set yourself up for a good hiding.
