My cycling started with buying a commuter bike to go to work.  Believe me, you do not want to by the Makro bike.

I bought a road bike from a cycling shop and it was very entry level but still a few steps up from a Makro bike.  The two big problems that will bite you is the sizing of the bike and the components on the bike.

The odds are that you need to have the bike fitted for your body.  Entry level bikes tend to have limitations especially with the stem.  Entryl level bikes handlebar and stems are a single unit so customising that will be a problem and costly to fix.

The components on entry level bikes are cheap and do not wear well.  If you start commuting properly you will find that you will have gearing problems very soon.  To effectively resolve that you will spend the price of a  Makro bike just to fix your groupset up.

Buy a good secondhand bike rather.

Always remember what my friend said in his first MTB race on a Game special bike (he was stocked as he thought he had a decent DS bike!)...

"Its the only bike I have ever had to pedal just to keep going downhill"

I knew where he was all time....I just listened for the squeeking and creaking of the bike and his curses....!

I bought my GT Av1 from Cycle Zone in Rustenburg back in 2010. While I wouldnt recommend the mechanical service side of their shop I will say that the owner gave me a good deal on the bike and helped me as far as he could. 6 Years later and thousands of KM's later the bike is still alive and well!

If you're planning on cycling for a few years look at a better spec'd 2nd hand bike for around 5k.

Hi there, would like some advice want to start commuting and saw this Raleigh mxr 29er at game for R2800. I also went to cycle zone and saw a second hand cubixx entry level bike for 3k.I don't know much about bicycles so some advice would really help Thanks

Avoid it, I bought one a few months before my 1st Rgus , by the time I had finished I had replaced the wheels, brakes, cranks and been through 2 chains.

The price I paid, plus the repairs i could have bought a much more decent bike and had change.

If you are wanting to go new, have a look at Rapid bikes. They start at R3.5k. They are entry level, but far better than any Makro special. From what I've heard, they are a brand of Momsen, so I assume they are available at any Momsen dealer.

I looked at one for my cousin a few minutes ago and I think for your purposes, it is perfect.

I that Cyclezone is a dealer.

I sold my 29er silverback sola4 for 5500, I think they're good bikes for the price. Have a look on the classifieds here, there are some good bikes for sale.

I'd agree that it's a better idea to stay away from supermarket bikes as the components are super super entry level.

Just thinking about this for a second, surely those bikes are not made of mild steel and plastic bags? If used as a commuter (NOTHING else) and well maintained why should it not last ....

Because on his commute he will notice this dirt road leading off his route, and he will have difficulty sleeping. And he will become distracted , and his wife will notice a change . And he will ride past that turnoff every day. And then one day............

Please avoid Game and Makro bikes.

Rather look at something like this (nearly new):

https://www.bikehub.co.za/classifieds/214432-specialized-rock-hopper/

Or, as suggested, shop around for a 2nd-hand 26-inch MTB.  There's get great value for R5k.

The guys here on the hub will always be willing to help with advice whether it's a good bike and good price.  Use this free advice, as it will save you lots of $$$ in the long run.

A good 2nd-hand bike will last 10x longer than a crappy new one.
