So it's taper week. However, due to trying to recover from an annoyingly persistent cold, I've essentially been a bum for the past 3 weeks. Any thoughts on how to tackle this last week?

Keep it as a taper week... trying to cram additional / longer workouts are not really going to benefit but will likely just fatigue you.  Keep workouts short and sharp

Eish! Cape Town weather has been a bit miserable this past weekend (grateful for the rain though) - so tapering and sleeping was definitely the order of the day!

My mate and I very keen to be getting ready for our first tri. Its been great following this thread and gleaning off a few pearls of wisdom. Good luck to all athletes; keep healthy; and travel safely if you need to get to Durbs an' all!

So, I have been saying that I am undertrained for this event, well I looked at my Garmin log since the start of March and this is what I have come up with:

Swim  4.8 km total distance.

Cycling  19 hrs total time.

Run  81.4 km total distance.

Pilates, Kettlebels  22 hours.

Well that opened my eyes somewhat ! Not a good base.

I am still eyeing a 6hr 30 time though. :whistling:

So my stats from 1 March are,

Run                 403km

Swim               17km

Cycle               36.5 Hours

Also feel undertrained compared to where i wanted to be but i feel confident with the run portion though, just need get off the bike in one piece as lately my left knee hurts on the bike.

Good luck to all

My training stats from 1 March are:

Run 181km

Cycle 1122km (42 hours)

Swim 65km

Looking back I think I had some good training blocks. Need to up the running distance a bit I think. Lost around 3 weeks of training from sickness too. Oh well, lesson learnt.

With that amount of swimming and even the bike i don't foresee you having any trouble getting to the run leg and then from the just wing it. Did you end up pulling out or will you be there on Sunday?

Edit : Didn't see the 100km before the 81km Sorry, so with 181km of running i think you will be fine on the day but then again this will be my 1st so what do i know.

I think that most reasonably fit people can “wing” a 70.3... just be prepared to suffer :-)

Yes, I am not concerned about the distances, I know I can finish.

It is amazing that you can think you are doing ok with your training (even though you know you aren't doing enough) and then you check your training log, and you are nowhere near where you thought you would be. That is the beauty of logging all your training.

I am a farmer, so I keep reasonably active through work, and my wife is a kettlebell instructor (amongst other things), so I am lucky in that I have some external factors to keep me reasonably fit.

Also, I did my first Ultra Tri 20 years ago, so I have a bit of history.

Swim 71kms (25.2hrs)

Cycle 2270kms (84hrs)

Run 479kms (46hrs)

As I have done EL and PE this year, Durbs is being done for a bit of fun ... and to complete the African Series for the special medal :)
