How the training going you ready?

Training is awesome. Just been sick this week, so taking it slow. Had a sodium deficiency (which causes all sorts of weirdness) and now sinus infection. Ready? Hell no. Going to skip this event until I am more comfortable on my bike. 2 months on the bike is just not enough time. Longest run so far has been 10km too, so terrified of a HM. So maybe it's a good thing.

Pity, the bike course is gentle hey...if you have already entered then delay the cancellation to the last minute kind of thing. Think it may be worth a shot even if you pull out during the event. Gain some experience.

Me, no. wont be doing Durban at all. I might go down to spectate though and drink beer and eat bunny chow and generally mis behave.

Now that sounds like a lot of fun. Why do we do these things to ourselves?

If you have entered, do it.... swim is easy, take your time as is the warmup.  Bike course is pretty flat and easy.... then walk/run the the run leg.. there will be many doing the same.

Ther plenty of time to complete and you will learn a lot .... and probably surprise yourself on the psychological side of things... that you can do it.

Edit: Will add that it is the easiest of the 2 Ironman 70.3's to do.  The run is pretty flat along the beachfront

Will by my 3rd Durban, 1st one we swam, last year we queued for the long dualthlon, this year we have the double transition.... so will be able to give feedback on which is better.

I still don't like the neutral 2km cycle zone on the promenade straight after the swim.  Think this is going to be messy with 3000 athletes and joe public... it is bad enough on the run leg, now we have adrenaline pumped athletes trying to make up for a bad swim or just going for it..... I predict chaos!!

I would have been super pissed off if there was no swim, it would feel completely wrong without it. With the neutral zone though it might be incentive to hit the swim a little harder and then get yourself back together before the bike leg starts properly.

Because they are fun! If you have paid the entry then go do the race, even if you dont make it then its great experience for next time.

Just take your time and you might find you finish the whole thing and surprise yourself.

Fully agree, you'll learn slot about yourself along the way.

On a different note, does anyone have the Garmin file for the bike course?

Bike course is slightly new this year as the swim is different and transition T1... but is basically out on the M2 to Zimbali, turn around and come back, with a smaller loop still on the M2 close to the finish of the bike leg

The run is deceiving and a flat course can take it out of you as you are constantly in the same position and using the same muscles and dodging the people on the promenade who dont give a crap about your rythm. That being said I will take Durban over Bunkers Hill any day but I do find the run on Durban to be quite hard.

Looking so forward to this race...

Training has gone very well (compared to what I did for EL), so looking at a very good race

Will be on a new bike and ready to pump those times!!!

The time is fast approaching :-)

Have to sort of agree re durban.... although I prefer hill runs so much prefer EL to Durbs !!

CM, post a pic of your new bike! It's a beauty.

EmJay, if you still worried about the 21km run, break it down into 5km run, 1km walk, 5km run, 1km walk etc .... there are many that run/walk the whole way.

In fact my mate cramped badly after 3kms last year, and still hobbled/walked/shuffled to the finish

Flat courses are heavy on the quads but at least a little easier to keep shuffling if the tank is empty.

John Bailey up and through Bunkers is a killer, I run it often when I do a run-swim-run from home to gym and back.

for some or other reason I had a torrid day on the run last year too, my slowest 21 km run ever...around 3 hours as I recall. But , some days go your way and others don't, its life.
