OVAL MTB chainring feedback

I'm using AB oval rings on my Pyga (34t with 11-42 10s cluster) and on the tandem (53/39 with 10s 11-36). Both are fantastic and I feel a lot more powerful on both bikes (plus I'm collecting more Strava PRs and KOMs. The wide/narrow fit on the ring makes more of a difference than I would have imagined too.

Go for it - very worthwhile investment. I bought direct from AB.

I've been running an oval for a while now, and I have only positives to say about it.

I went for the Rapide and the quality and fit on it is fantastic, in my opinion better and easier to fit than the AB.

Next time buy it at the Sterling price - they still have the pre-Brexit exchange rate on their site.

Hi guys,

Wanted some feedback from anyone who has used an oval chainring for a 1x setup, the good, the bad and whether or not it is something to look into on a long term basis.

Not much to say, love mine. Combined it with wide range 10 speed cassette. Thoroughly enjoy Cape Pioneer with it

About 5 years ago I converted to Qrings and they were great. Rode them for 2 years and did not upgrade them again due to them being very expensive and having limited options on 1 x 10 setups ( me running 30 - 32 front single chainring ) and Rotor only having 34 tooth. Rode the last 2+ years with my round ring and I must say the single ring setups makes you strong and your pedal stroke evolve...About 6 months ago converted my round ring to oval and it took me nearly a month to get use to it. Sore knees due to my legs not use to only pushing kind of down on the oval than the round stroke on the round rings. Eventually got use to it. Had to do a recovery ride one sunday and pulled my old spinning bike out of the garage and took a 30min spin. Felt weird for 5 min and then fine. Next day on my oval again on the mtb and it took me a week again to get use to the oval. Sore knees and and and...took the oval of and put the round ring back. Can't be happier.

I run a 32 oval from rapide on my ss and a 34 oval on my std mtb also from rapide greatest service from Wayne (kiwi) at rapid.

They have both given me the power to now ride a 2.45 marathon.

Won't touch absolute black as the rep/agent is totally disinterested.

I ordered my Absolute Black ovals (32t and 34t ) through Evo Bikes and had absolute fantastic service. As always.

Apologies if i hi-jack the thread...

But a question regarding these oval rings? Do you get the same size oval ring as your current round ring on your 1x setup or size up or size down?

Same size.

I run a 34T or 32T, AB depending on the course with an 11-42 XT rear.

The main sensation for me is one of always driving the wheel, it feels like there is constant power through the whole pedal stroke.

The extra traction is noticeable, especially on loose climbs.

My experience with frame clearance is that your crank set up has an influence.

I have a SRAM xo1 direct mount and I can fit a 34T AB to my Niner, my friend has a spider mount and he cannot. (same bike).

There is also a school of thought (and evidence) that if you have 'proper' pedalling technique you achieve all of the above with a round blade anyway......

Would have to agree with most of the others here.  I've got a Kalbo 32T oval with 42T Hillkill on the rear on one bike, and a Rapide 32t oval with same cassette ratio on the rear on the other.  Fantastic service from both Colin (Kalbo) and Wayne (Rapide).

Just in case anyone is wondering - I'm a bit pedantic and gold (Kalbo) matched the one bike better whereas the black (Rapide) matched the other bike better. ;)
