The Sub 7

The problem I'm having is that as soon as Queen's "I want to ride my bicycle" has played at least 10 times and the CTCT announcer goes “HOOPLA” I, like all the others around me, forget that it is a “cycle tour” and nor a race. No time for a leisurely breakfast in Kalk bay, a selfie on Chappies or a relaxing stroll up Suikerbossie, just peddling like a demented hamster to beat the magic (insert favourite unrealistic goal here) time.

So with that in mind I researched my options, it seems that the only way to remedy this would be to use a specially designed bicycle purpose built for the task at hand. (Other excellent suggestions were: “Don’t use a 29er, they are really fast you know. Make sure it is not red, the red ones are really quick and avoid a $pecialized, you will be done before you know it)

Fortunately I accidently tripped over my wallet a while back and bought what can only be described as a recently abused, much unloved 80’s no name brand steel framed road bike. One careful owner and about 5 very careless ones. Nearly mint condition, the normal scratches from use (And  a lot others from misuse),  3 layers of paint lovingly applied with a broom, every bolt either rusted in place or stripped.

Ideal for what I have in mind then.

Ladies and gentleman, I give you the “Sub 7” (Queue thunderous applause)

Uuhmmmm, Clement,

You cant use that bike. It has no lugs for the downtube shifters you will need to really make it special.

...there seems to be a few essential parts MIA?

O ye of little faith.....

Yes, but it does wonders for weight reduction. (Actually the missing bits had to be angle grinded off because they where F@$%@ed)

The clock at cycletour.co.za says I have 145 days, 8 hours, 46 minutes and 31 seconds left so if there are some handling issues after a test ride I will have a think about adding a few accessories (A seat might be a nice place to start)

Well, if people brag about doing a "3h42 on a 26er with knobblies", imagine how the OP could brag about doing a "6h52 with no wheels or pedals!"

It seems as if you gentlemen where correct, there are a few minor handling issues in the current configuration.

So after a bit of severe head scratching it seems as if I would have no choice but to add a few optional extras.

Let’s start with the peddally going roundy chain thingy also popularly known as the crankset.

With an eye on the budget and because I could not find anything that I liked the only option seems to be to use the crankset that came with the bike and lightly modify it to suit.

In this case the crankset is a quite heavy affair with a built in chain guard and pinned stainless steel blades.

Step 1: Using trusty angle grinder to remove the outer ring and chain guard

Step 2: Start rounding off the freshly angle grinded bits

Step 3: How do we make this thing lighter? (By at least 0.0034 grams)

Step4: Get tired, take last photo, go to bed.

This thing is making me jimpels. Nice polish, what's your method?

Hahaha, thanks.

Not much of a method, after trying a few shortcuts (Which all failed) the best method is simply starting with 200 grit sandpaper and then working your way up to 400, 600, 800. 1000 and 1200 grit. After that polish it with a Builder's Warehouse buffing wheel and polish.

The real trick is not to sand it to much, a once over with every grade is fine and don't press to hard, light pressure is OK. Use water and Sunlight Liquid to keep the sandpaper wet.

And wear waterproof gloves otherwise you end up with hands more wrinkled than your grandmother after a day in the pool.
