New saddle purchase?

guys, need some advice.

I have been for two bike set-ups to get my saddle issue sorted.

However, I am still getting seat bone pain after about 40-50km. It is a saddle I have been using for at least 5 years and never had an issue before. I have moved it onto a new bike as it is meant to be comfy and "ridden" in.

Will buying a new saddle solve the seat bone pain, or is it a case of just vasbyt and toughen up ?

My LBS has offered to loan me a few saddles to try out - but time is running out for me to ride a new saddle in, so kinda looking for some hub advice on this one.

If it's one you've been comfortable on then probably no, but also maybe. Could have been comfortable with an incorrect setup and now that you have sorted your setup the saddle is not working anymore.

Who and what have you tried? I can highly recommend Peet le Roux at the Specialized Stellenbosch store.

Great that they're willing to load youa saddle or three - I would reckon for each of those you may need some help to ensure you are in the best possible position over the cranks.

Hey Slo, you in a bit of bother mate. I am sure the LBS will sort you out.Changing saddles is never a good thing. Each one to their own though.

I recently purchased a Murray Freedom saddle which had done one FC. I put it on and it was really amazing first time out doing 80kms gravel (for me anyway) You are welcome to use it if this helps? Saddle bag will not fit comfortably underneath it though. I also have a Rolls (refurbished) you could also borrow.

Desperate times call for desperate measures.

just my 2 cents

I ride fiziks

I find that even these expensive saddles collapse internally at a certain point in time

they look fine and you don't notice that the support isn't where it should be till you ride on a new one which is supporting you where it should and not where it shouldn't so to speak

five years is a very old saddle sometimes ridden or broken in can just mean broken :whistling:

which can be a pain in the ass

try a loaner of a new one of what you already have ..

Have you had your sit bones measured?  Is the saddle the correct width.  I rode with a Fizik Tundra for years (about 130mm wide) and never had a problem until recently.  Measured my sit bones and I should be on a 143mm saddle.  Replaced saddle with a new Giant saddle, 143mm wide and much better now.

The guys at velo life have loaned me a sella italia gel flow man saddle for the week. They are also getting me a scoop saddle.

From Helderberg cycles I am trying the power comp from a young bloke who says he has done the Freedom challenge in 10 days, named Jan. Did not instill much confidence in me with his sales talk and no listening to me. He said I need to have a proper bike fit done with him, as he is only one of 4 people in the southern hemisphere who are trained to do what he does. When I said I had a bike fit done, he was adamant that I need to do it with him. Anyway, I digress.

I will give Peet a call at Stellenbosch.

Oh yes, specialised would not let me even touch a saddle without having my ass on the assometer. 143mm

I bought on on Aliexpress for R580 @ 130grams - did my Audax 420km and Eversting ride on it over the weekend, my @$$ is not bleeding so it's pretty good imo.

Saddles are tricky little items. My bum likes Fizik Tundra saddles.

About 2 years ago I thought Id give Spez saddles a try, that wasnt pleasant for me. I would rather have sat on a cactus for those 3 hours.

Also tried one of those Selle SMP saddles that looks like a hornbills beak, that gave me a lower back pain because of its shape.

Decided to stick with Fizik, my ass likes it and is happy there for hours on end. A Gobi is a no go for me too, thats like an enema.

Hi Slowbee

I trust this message finds you well.

This is Johann - from Helderberg Cycle World / Specialized , I know this is a public forum and thus I would like to rectify our past discussion as I know we are your LBS and would love to keep you as one of our clients.

Regarding our coversation we had in the shop - I think we might have misunderstood each other , which is fine , it happens and there is no blaming to be done . I asked you if you were doing the freedom challenge as you told me that you will be spending a lot of time on the bike , and the only VERY long stuff is the freedom and the munga , I then went on to tell you that I have spend 10 hours / day on a the saddle during the Trans-karoo with no issues and that it was due to saddle choice and the correct bike fit on the bike - which goes hand in hand ,as it would give you greater comfort and make you more efficient on the bike and it would reduce your chances of any injuries and saddle sores.

At Specialized we get continues training through SBCU (Specialized Bicycle Components University) - 5 of us - who have been fitting for a few years , who has build up a lot of fitting experience over the few years were invited to attend the the 2nd course - discussing everything that was learned through fitting over the years - this course was the first one of its kind.

Here at Helderberg Cycle world - we only want what is best for our clients ,to give you many happy hours of riding, Peet le Roux is accoring to myself probably the best Body Geometry Fit Specialist  (he did my set-up as well) - and I would also reccomend him.

I hope this will clear up our past discussion - best of luck finding that perfect saddle.

Yours in Cycling

Johann
