Scaling down to a single bike only? Advice please?

Hi all

Please forgive the drawn out narrative…

I am looking for some help, opinions and advice in solving my dilemma?

I think I have too many bikes for my purposes.

I am undecided as to getting one “do it all” bike (if there is such a thing) and disposing of the bikes I currently use because 1) None of them are able to be used to their potential and are wasted on me 2) I do not race anymore 3) Maintaining three bikes plus one is costly.4) Space is an issue 5) Age and physical problem. 6) Riding a bike is the only exercise I am ableto do.

My current times on the bikes are trails (no jumps etc) with the occasional road ride with the club and the odd tour thrown if for good measure.

Looking for a large, discs, definitely no carbon, able to take a 2.2 tyre interchangeable with a 700c wheel. Maybe lugs for tripping? I have a suspension stem and seatpost, which is good enough for me and will suffice.

Do I sell my Ciocc, Superfly and hybrid bike and another small ladies bike to get a decent Cyclocross/gravel grinder machine?

Any suggestions as to what bike I should look at and availability?

Would appreciate the Hub input.

With thanks

Presume you're looking at a hardtail?

If I may suggest a few options that fit your requirements...

Mercer

Lol.

Okay, apart from that most obvious and droolworthy choice, there are others such as on one and so on that could be truly multi purpose trail / commute / big distance bikes and take both wheel sizes with ease, though you'll probably be looking at the niner end of the market unless you go 650+, in which case things like the trek stache would be a consideration. Not sure if that can take panniers, tho.

Honestly - my first choice would be a mercer custom bike, built around a hardtail design. That way you get EXACTLY what you want, no corners cut.

2nd choice would be on one or one of the other British marques like Ragley, and maybe the commencal (not sure of their pannier ability though)

If you're looking more at a gravel grinder /. CX bike, my primary recommendation is still the mercer, but then you can also go ritchey and on one as well. Just build it up a bit differently.

Either way - loads of options. What about transforming your superfly into a mega gravel grinder? It's already got a pretty steep head angle and is able to take 700c wheels...

Thanks Myles,  Was thinking along these lines,

Your inputs are always worthwhile.

Your bike suggestions are good but maybe out of my league price wise.

Okay - what's stopping you from selling the bikes ab keeping the one set of wheels from the Superfart? Afaik a mercer frame is around 15k or so (depending on what you want)

If you've got 3 bikes... How much could you get for them?

Just asking cos I think you may need to see just how much you have to play with. It may be possible

Nothing as far as I understand.  Myles had a point in rebuilding the Superfly...I like the slack angle but I think I prefer a hardtail. Cheapest option I think but not exactly what I would like.  If I am going to spend the bucks for the last time I should do it properly?

I have 4 wheelsets which I could use and interchange.
